Sudden Death Playoff at Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament

On a cloudy day, 28 players took to the fairway on the township's Coakley-Russo Memorial Golf Course on Saturday in hopes of winning the grand prize and having their names carved on the plaque of the Mayor's Cup.

Enthusiasm was high as the teams approached their starting position. Each group seemed to believe its players had a good chance to take it all.  As the game progressed, the scores were very close and excitement filled the hearts of the players, but it was stamina and concentration that helped to keep the leaders in the lead.

At the end, two teams emerged victorious with a 5-under par and were forced to face each other in a sudden death playoff. The sudden death playoff began at the seventh hole but was not about to end so soon — both teams once again found themselves in a tie.

The sudden death contest continued to hole No. 8, where one team finally emerged as the winner. The team included players Joe Hickey, Gerty Horton, John Tansey and Gerry Hothersall.

Prizes were also awarded for longest drive and closest to pin for both men and women. The winners in these categories were Kevin Cox for longest drive for men, 280 yards; Joe Hickey for closest to pin for men, 17 feet, 3 inches; Melissa Paul, longest drive for women, 230 yards; and Jackie Tobia with closest to pin for women at 24 feet, 3 inches."

After the match, players were treated to a hearty barbecue meal prepared by the chef of the Foxhole Cafe.

Mayor John Malay presented the prizes to the winners.

The Coakley-Russo Memorial Golf Course is located in Lyons. It  features 3,300 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 34. The course rating is 68.4 and it has a slope rating of 110.
