Try Horseback Riding on a Crisp Autumn Day

Friends of Lord Stirling Stable to host annual fall trail ride; beginners welcome.

Even those with little or no riding experience can explore the trails at Lord Stirling Stable next Sunday, Sept. 26, at the annual Fall Nature Ride hosted by The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable.

The Fall Nature Ride will be conducted on trails through the woods and fields on the grounds at the county-owned Lord Stirling Stable at 256 S. Maple Ave. The ride is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., with check-in at 7 am. Riders are invited to stay for a Hunt Breakfast following the ride. 

This horseback event is open to members and non-members who pre-register by calling Chuck Rosen prior to the ride at 908-758-0825, according to the stable office. The ride is open to individual riders age 12 and over and their friends and family. Riders between the age of nine and 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

All riders will be assigned a horse for the scheduled one-hour guided trail ride, which will be conducted at a walk. Trail guides will Guides will point out and attempt to identify plants, birds and animals along the 18-mile trail system of Lord Stirling Park.

People with little or no riding experience are welcome. Experienced English- style riders also may enjoy the leisurely ride with their non-rider friends. Participants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Riders must weigh less than 240 pounds.

The fee for the Nature Ride is $25 for members of the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable and $30 for non-members. Certified ASTM/SEI riding helmets and boots or shoes with hard, smooth soles and a definite heel are required and may be rented in the stable office for $3 each.

All riders must be enrolled with registration forms available in the stable office or online at www.flssnj.org. For further information, call the office at 908-766-5955 or NJ Relay 711 for individuals with hearing impairments.
