Moms Talk: How Do You Encourage Summer Reading?

This is the time of year when kids have time to kick back and explore...and what better way than with a book?

The summer reading list was recently revealed on the Bernards Township school website, and the other township schools undoubtedly have their own lists.

So, to some extent, your student has guidance, if not a requirement, for what he or she will be reading this summer. Will it be a chore for you to nudge them to read, or do they willingly dive into books?

Of course, if you need more suggestions, area libraries have well developed summer reading programs.

The will begin sign-ups for its summer reading program on June 19, although children don't need to sign up only on that date to participate.

The Bernardsville Library's Reading Log for children's summer reading will o live on June 18th, but participants may sign up at anytime online at the library website. The summer reading kickoff for Dream Big @ the Bernardsville Library is at 6:30 p.m. next Thursday.

All of these activities are great — but can you really convey the joy of lounging with a good book on a lazy summer day? Does that happen anymore?

How do libraries, schools and parents nudge children not only to read "required" books but to explore the stacks to find out something that really catches their attention — or maybe unleashes a life-changing passion?
