Ridge Senior Earns Gold with Clean Up at LBI

Project gathers residents and summer visitors to clean the beach of mess that others left behind.

wasn't the only Ridge High School attendee to go for the gold this summer. Meghan Maffey, a Ridge senior, last week completed her Gold Award Girl Scout project with a clean-up project that combined her efforts with community members down at Long Beach Island.

Maffey completed the project on Monday Aug. 27. The Girl Scouting Gold Project is comparable to the Eagle Scout designation for Boy Scouts, and Meghan's project consisted of the clean up of a 28-street stretch of the beaches of Ship Bottom, a local town on Long Beach Island.

Meghan and a group of volunteers wanted to provide an example of the benefit of clean beaches for tourism and also the area's environment. Along with cleaning the beach, Meghan also cleaned up after the free concerts that are held every Thursday night in the town of Ship Bottom.

Meghan had asked for help on the project from members of the local community, the Ship Bottom life guards, friends from Basking Ridge and renters who were staying on Long Beach Island that week. The town of Ship Bottom and Yobuck Landscaping donated gloves, brooms, and garbage bags for the occasion. The clean up started on 3rd Street beach and went all the way to 31st Street.

The crew worked hard together and accomplished a successful clean up. Meghan plans include a program to have this continue as a community project for years to come.
