Sample Riding Styles in July at Lord Stirling

Deadline this Thursday to register for this Sunday's first introductory English-style ride at Lord Stirling Stable.

Starting this Sunday, will host three special events during July for both novice and experiences equestrians at 256 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge. Both English and Western-style introductory rides will be offered to the public.

Introductory English-style horseback rides are scheduled on Sunday, July 8, and Sunday, July 22, both days at 10 a.m. Registration at the Stable office will be accepted through Thursday, July 5 for the earlier date and Thursday, July 19, for the later date. Space is limited for participants, who must be over 18 to register themselves, or be registered by parents if between ages 9 to 18.

An introductory Western-style horseback ride also is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 15. Registrations will be accepted through Thursday, July 12, at the stable office. Space also is limited for this ride.

The introductory ride offers the opportunity to experience a trail ride on horseback before deciding whether or not to commit to riding lessons. It is also a great “refresher” for those who have not ridden the English equestrian style in a long time, or for Western riders who would like to see if they enjoy English style riding.

The event will begin with a mini-lesson given by one of the Lord Stirling Stable-certified instructors. The ride swill take place rain or shine, and may be held in the indoor ring in the case of inclement weather.

Juniors and adults who weigh less than 200 pounds and are at least nine years old are eligible to participate in the introductory rides.

In addition, riders for the Western-style rides must be at least 5 feet tall. Riders between 9 and 18 years old must be registered by their parent or legal guardian.

An approved helmet and shoes or boots with hard, smooth soles and a definite heel are available for use at no additional cost.

Registration for the ride must be done in person at the Stable office, which is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The fee for the Intro Rides is $35 for Somerset County residents and $45 for out of county residents. Payment by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover is required at the time of registration.

Lord Stirling Stable is situated on 450 acres with 18 miles of trails (wooded and fields), one indoor ring, three outdoor rings, and an outdoor-jumping course.

Do you like riding in the heat? I remember one trail ride in hot sweaty weather with lots of bugs that seemed endless. What do you do to deal w/bugs? Does that discourage you from riding, or do you get on a horse anyway?
