Bernards PEC Holding 'Run to Read' 5K Fundraiser

USATF-certified 5K, a walk, prizes and other fun activities as part of fundraiser for school reading program.

The Bernards Parents for Exceptional Children (PEC) grou is hosting a 5K Run to Read Run/Walk on Sunday at Harry Dunham Park in Basking Ridge to raise funds for a reading program in local schools. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. with race time at 9:30 a.m.

Cost is $30 the day of the event. Information on the event also is posted on Patch, along with a link to purchase tickets ahead for $25.

Race proceeds will be donated to the Bernards Township Board of Education and used to purchase Lexia Reading Program licenses for township schools, according to information from the PEC. Lexia is a computer-based interactive phonics program, currently used with success by over 400 students in grades K-8, according to information from the PEC.

The event is a fundraiser to purchase additional licenses needed to give a greater number of students the opportunity to use the program.

The Run to Read event is designed to be fun for the entire family, with t-shirts for pre-registered participants, door prize giveaways, refreshments and fun activities for children.

The course is USATF certified with points awarded, trophies and medals for top scoring individuals in multiple age categories, and scoring by Best Racing Systems. A raffle for an IPad mini is also underway by the PEC and the drawing will be held the day of the race. 

Bernards PEC is a not-for-profit organization that advocates for children with learning and developmental disabilities and their families, and provides recreational, educational, mentoring and community service programs in Bernards Township. The PEC's goal is to strive to create an environment of understanding and acceptance for persons with disabilities within the community.
