Turkeys for Needy to be Collected at Local Sites

The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is hosting a turkey drive at several locations in Somerset County to collect frozen turkeys and non-perishable items to give to those in need. Included sites are in Basking Ridge and Bedminster.

Volunteers will be at four locations Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Donations will be collected at the Basilone parking lot of the ; the Kings Supermarket on Route 206 in Bedminster; the ShopRite on Elizabeth Avenue in Somerset; and on Finley Avenue in Basking Ridge.

The turkeys and other items donated will be used by the FoodBank to provide a Thanksgiving dinner and other holiday meals for those who need it during and after the holidays.

“Our partner agencies have reported a rise in need of 40 percent in the past year,” said Kathleen DiChiara, president and CEO of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, in a release from the company. “When you combine that recent rise in our poverty statistics, the situation is dire. We rely on these turkey drives to help combat the problem and provide a Thanksgiving meal for those in need.”

A total of 40 sites are taking part in the turkey drive across Northern and Central Jersey.

The FoodBank, according to the release, is also encouraging financial donations to purchase turkeys at wholesale prices and assist in distributing food and groceries to families in need during winter.
