School Board Seeks New Member, Holds Final Meeting of 2013

Ridge High School winter concert scheduled for this Tuesday.

The Bernards Township Board of Education, which will meet again at 7 p.m. on Monday, is seeking a replacement for the board's vice president, Audrey Cohen Sherwyn, who earlier this month informed the school board she will be resigning as of January.

The school board office now is accepting applications for a seat on the board that will be available effective January 27, 2014.

According to the school website, interested individuals should contact Christina Hendricks at the board of education office at 908-204-2600, ext 106, or via email atchendricks@bernardsboe.com in order to request an application packet.

The completed application packet must be submitted by Jan. 10, 2014.

The Board of Education will accept applications submitted by Jan. 10. The board then will review applications and select candidates to be interviewed at the January 27, 2014 Board of Education meeting. It is the intent of the board to make a final selection on that night after the interviews.

The candidate chosen would be sworn in immediately, according to the school website.

At the first meeting in December, Bernards School Superintendent Nick Markarian read a letter from Sherwyn, who this year serves as the board's vice president, stating that she will be relocating for her husband's job, and leaving Bernards Township.

Following the meeting, Markarian said the board will appoint a new board member in January to fulfill Sherwyn's position through 2014.

Sherwyn's term expires at the end of 2015, according to the Bernards Township school district website. Markarian said an election would be held next year for a board member to fill out the final year of her term.

Parents have been bringing up subjects at recent Board of Education meetings, including next year's school calendar.

Drafts of the school calendar for next year, 2014-15, are online, as well as drafts for the following two years.

The draft does not include a return to two full weeks of vacation in the late winter and again in spring, although that had been brought up as a proposal by parents at previous meetings.

Also this week, Ridge High School's Winter Choral Concert, under the direction of Barbara Retzko, featuring the Ridge Chorale, A Cappella Choir Honors and the Ridge High School Concert Choir, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, in the Ridge High School Performing Arts Center at 268 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge.

A special meeting of the Bernards Township Planning Board scheduled for this Wednesday has been canceled. The meeting was to have been a continuation of the public hearing on the proposed mosque in Liberty Corner.

However, that continued hearing, at which revised plans are expected to have been filed beforehand, has been moved to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 15. That meeting is expected to again be held in the courtroom at the municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane, Basking Ridge.
