Township Committeeman Scott Spitzer Resigning

Bernards Township Committeeman Scott Spitzer had already announced he would not seek re-election this fall, but his departure apparently will come sooner rather than later. Spitzer announced on Tuesday he has already taken another professional position, and he and his wife intend to move from Basking Ridge to New York City in early August. The Township Committee now is charged with selecting another Republican to replace Spitzer.

Ridge 15U Baseball Wins State  Babe Ruth Championship for Northern NJ

The Ridge Baseball 15U team won the Babe Ruth State Tournament for Northern NJ on Thursday night, scoring an 11-1 victory over Secaucus. The team now advances to the 2013 Middle Atlantic Region Babe Ruth Baseball 13-15 Tournament., to begin in August in Atlantic City, according to information from Ridge Baseball.

Ridge High's Advanced Placement Rate Up to Almost 97 Percent

The percentage of Ridge High School's students taking Advanced Placement courses who passed the AP tests for college credit given each May rose to 96.7 percent for 2013, surpassing even last year's passing rate by 3 or 4 percent, said Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian. Markarian said he had just received the report from the College Board on Monday, before he passed the news along at Monday's Board of Education meeting.

Bus Schedules Detailed for Longer Elementry School Days

Starting on the first day of school, on Monday, Sept. 9, school buses will be scheduled to arrive at each of the four elementary schools by 8:25 a.m., to reflect a starting time that has been moved to 8:45 a.m., instead of the longstanding 9 a.m. Parents also will be asked to arrive before that time. Buses then will arrive at the elementary schools — including Oak Street, Cedar Hill, Liberty Corner and Mount Prospect — at 3 p.m., which had been the dismissal time for elementary students in previous school years.

Ridge 13U Baseball One Run Short of Northern NJ Championship

Despite a comeback to reach a 4-4 tie in the 7th inning, Ridge 13U baseball dropped Wednesday's Northern N.J. Babe Ruth championship game with a 5-4 loss to Bayonne, which scored the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Nevertheless, the Ridge team still qualifies to go on to the Babe Ruth Middle-Atlantic Regional Tournament in upstate New York.

Vehicles Burglarized, Vandalized in Bernards Township

IPhones and other electronics devices, and other valuables, including a GPS and cash were stolen from vehicles around the township within the past week, Bernards Township police said. Some of the vehicles were unlocked, and police strongly urged residents to lock their cars, and remove valuables from within.
