Moms Talk Q&A

Moms Talk: Should the RHS Dropoff Behind Cedar Hill Continue?

It's now been a week since Ridge High School buses were rerouted for morning dropoff behind Cedar Hill School.

This week, Mom's Talk (also for dads, kids, grandparents and other observers) returns to a timely topic — the school administration's decision to reroute Ridge High School morning buses through the Cedar Hill Elementary School traffic loop in an effort to relieve weekday traffic backups at the entrance to the high school. The change was implemented on a trial basis. The decision is supposed to come up for reconsideration at next Monday night's Board of Education meeting, at 7 p.m. at the William Annin Middle School. School officials have asked for the public's input at that meeting. RHS principal Frank Howlett said today that the rerouting of morning buses will probably continue through that time. So, what do you think? What do your kids …

It would be great to hear from other drivers — and students who drive to school — affected by the am traffic backup at RHS. And what other solutions might people favor?   more ›

Giants Parade: New York or New Jersey?

The debate continues.

It's an argument that's been boiling over since 1976–or, at least since the Giants started winning Super Bowls. Where to hold the victory parade? The Canyon of Heroes, as is the traditional place a New York-based sporting team takes its victory lap (the G-Men are set to walk down at 11 a.m. Tuesday), or in New Jersey, where the newly-crowned Super Bowl champion team has actually been located for 36 years? It's hotly-debated, so much so Gov. Chris Christie has been calling them the "New Jersey" Giants. What do you think? Should it be exclusively in New Jersey? New York? Or, can football fans from both sides of the border agree that the Giants are both states' teams? Chime in below.

There is nothing to compare to a ticker tape parade thru the Canyon of Heroes. NJ gets most of the economic benefit of the Giants and NY has to pay for the parade. What's wrong with that?   more ›

Letter to the Editor

LETTER: How Lyme Affected One Young Resident

Basking Ridge mom recalls the virus that created havoc in her son's life, and notes information on Lyme disease will be part of this year's Super Bowl.

Editor's Note: The following letter is from a Basking Ridge mother who said she has a cause — "to spread awareness about Lyme disease which affects so many people here in our area, especially our town." She submitted this piece to Patch to notify readers that during this Sunday's Super Bowl game there will be a Jumbotron exhibit to educate the public about the signs and symptoms of Lyme, which she said is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. To the Editor: What started one fall as flu-like symptoms ended up being the beginning of a long journey through a medical nightmare. My child, an avid athlete who could run relentlessly and lived for sports was confronted with perhaps the biggest challenge of his life — convincing others that he was …

Narenj Persian Grill Offers a Different Flavor in Basking Ridge

Menu offers tasty options for trying something new as well as some familiar foods.

Each week, Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. This week, we look at the Narenj Persian Grill in the mall off Mountain View Boulevard in Basking Ridge. Narenj Persian Grill 25 Mountain View Blvd. Basking Ridge Phone: 908-580-0600 Website: www.narenjpersiangrill.com Heading out to Narenj Persian Grill for dinner on a Friday night, as I have often done, always feels like a bit of an escape from the everyday. It isn't only that there is a break from the workweek, but also that the menu and atmosphere are different from any other restaurant I know of in northern Somerset County. Manager Farzan Dadgar said Narenj has been open for about two and a half years, and he can think of nothing similar …

Is the Leap to Middle School Too Big?

The difference between fifth and sixth grade in Bernards Township schools is quite large.

Each year, a new crop of fifth graders from all four schools around Bernards Township (each with its own personality) prepares to make a rite of passage into a brave new world — sixth grade, at the William Annin Middle School. Inevitably, students do make the transition — but usually with more than a little trepidation. Suddenly, there are changing classes, much more responsibility, more rules, a loss of that cozy elementary school atmosphere, and — as this year's homework survey of parents and students indicates — much more homework. Of course, there are many doors opened for elementary students entering middle school, many with unexpected benefits. My older son, who hates to sit still, was able to focus better simply because he had the …

I don't believe there is a gender bias with regards to discipline at WAMS. If your child received a lunch detention it is because he chose not to follow the clearly defined rules in the cafeteria. I am glad they have rules and consequences for those students who chose not to obey, because it is a small space and a lot of children. Things could get out of hand quickly if they did not have …   more ›

Is Cheating Common in Bernards Township Schools?

Is cheating in local schools as rampant as some would say? And what exactly qualifies as cheating?

During the public conversations regarding student stressors before the Board of Education in recent months, the issue came up several times about how the pressure to succeed supposedly pushes students to cheat. One of the examples given is the student who purchases an old, graded test to get the right answers ahead of time. This is a problem that far exceeds the borders of Bernards Township! But then the definition of cheating got a little muddy. From what I gathered, it's okay to look at tests and notes that your older brother or sister saved from a few years earlier. Maybe even encouraged. So, how far of a leap is it to share that test with your best girlfriend who might not be lucky enough to have an older sibling? (But, hey, she's got …

From what I have heard, from very credible sources, cheating in RHS is very common. Between classes, many students share what was on the test with their friends, and their friends will do the same in other situations to pay back. There are also incidents where one teacher will sell answer to others. On some level, I think cheating is tolerated because incidents of cheating will not be reported …   more ›

Sixth-Grader Writes About Sleepaway Math Camp

Student says camp in Colorado — to be moved to a different location this summer — was a great chance to learn about math, meet friends and explore new surroundings.

Editor's Note: The following column was submitted by Hitha Santosh, 11, a sixth-grader at William Annin Middle School. Hitha wrote a review of a sleepaway math camp, MathPath, which she attended last summer. The camp, for students ages 11 through 14, is run through a math professor at Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. "When I told my friends that I was going to a math camp, they all screamed some variation of 'OMG! Math camp? Poor you!' I know that most kids think like that; in fact, I did too, at first," Hitha wrote the Patch in an email. However, she said she found the camp to be a great experience, and she enjoyed the counselors and campers and the fun things she did. She said she wanted to share that experience with other kids in …
