Bernards High Seeks Nominees for New Wall of Honor

High School to launch new wall of honor project after taking nominations through Aug. 15.

After more than 100 years of history, Bernards High School is planning to install a Wall of Honor, perhaps accompanied by a sculpture, that will honor "exemplary citizens that serve as role models for all members of the Bernards High School community." "It's a tremendous project," said Bernards High Principal Scott Neigel. The project still is in the planning stages. Neigel said that a sculpture, possibly a tree with branches reaching out to different areas of achievement, is being considered for the wall that is near the community room at the high school. Sources of funding also still are being explored, Neigel said on Thursday. But the principal was definite in giving credit to the initiative to the Bernards High student council. Neigel …

3 BOE Members Unsure About Seeking Re-election

But longtime member Michael Byrne said that he is leaning toward running again because he offers 'different opinion' on board.

The three Bernards Township Board of Education members whose terms expire at the end of this year each said following Monday's meeting they had not yet decided whether they would file with the county by June to seek re-election to additional three-year terms. But board member Michael Byrne, most likely to vote out of line with the other eight members on the board, responded to a question of whether he would run again with, "Do you think I offer a different opinion once in a while?" Because of that reason, Byrne said he is "leaning" toward seeking re-election. Byrne is a longtime member of the Bernards Township Board of Education, reportedly serving from 1985 to 1997 and then from 2001 to the present time. Board member Elaine Kusel, who is …

I hope Mike Byrne does decide to run, he'll have my vote. I don't always agree with him, but at least he brings things out at the public meeting for all to hear. Now for William Koch, I was at a meeting several years ago when he was the BOE President. During the the public comment session, a gentleman got up to speak out about something he didn't agree with(I can't remember what the issue was), …   more ›

Parents Reminded of Pitfalls of Social Media, Technology

Bernards superintendent urges checks on whether students are properly using technology in and out school.

Whether it's putting up inappropriate posts on Facebook or Twitter, "sexting" on phones or kids messaging strangers, Bernards Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian has issued a reminder to district parents to be aware of the pitfalls of personal technology in the hands of students. The email, sent out as a special Friday Folder, asked parents to talk to their children and to help eliminate opportunities for the potential harm that could come of a potent mixture of young people faced with making instant decisions about snapping photos, recording a video, placing a call or text and more. "A wide variety of modern equipment, software, websites, digital content and apps can create unfortunate circumstances when mixed with young people," the …

"Kids need to have the school issue them iPads." Seriously? At what age and for what purpose? I have yet to see any kid doing anything constructive with and ipad, tablet or smart phone. Ridge Remains in Top 15 in U.S. News' Top High Schools

Report also ranks Bernards Township's Ridge High School at No. 200 in nation.

Ridge High School is this year ranked no. 14 in New Jersey, and no. 200 in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report's annual rating of top high schools. Ridge was no. 12 last year, but now nine of the top 16 schools are magnet schools which are allowed to be selective about the students they admit, noted Sean Siet, assistant superintendent in Bernards Schools. As far as comprehensive public high schools — who must accept any student within the district — Ridge can be counted as the number five comprehensive school in New Jersey, according to the report's criteria, Siet said. That criteria includes the ratio of teachers to students, college readiness, and proficiency in math and language, according to the categories in the high …

I graduated from Chatham borough in 1978. My older brother who played baseball would talk about the corn field he just played their game on in Basking Ridge. I think Chatham is the school who is just above Ridge 's rating. Believe me it is completely different in Chatham now. The new people in this little small town that I grew up in and which my parents still live in the same house they bought …   more ›
