Super: Teachers Needed to Reduce Class Sizes

Goger says about four elementary teachers needed next year to bring class sizes to within district guidelines.

Even though the 2012-13 school budget already has been approved, the Board of Education has talked about allocating some of the funds within to revive an elementary Spanish or enrichment programs that were cut from previous budgets. But on Monday night, Schools Superintendent Valerie Goger recommended that those programs be put on hold for next year, and that priority be given instead to hiring four elementary school teachers, give or take, to keep class sizes within the school district's accepted guidelines. While the board might want to reinstate the elementary enrichment or foreign language programs in future years, "I don't think this is the year to do it," she said. In addition, Goger said that projecting out beyond the coming school …

Teachers May Be Added in Approved Budget

This is the first year in which voters do not get a chance to approve or deny local taxation to support the school system.

Instead of being placed on a public ballot for a yes or no vote, the 2012-13 school budget received public comments from two residents on Monday before the Board of Education gave final approval to a $93.26-million spending plan for next year. The approved budget includes a 2 percent increase in the general fund budget that would add $182 onto an average township home assessed at $577,394, according to school figures. New state guidelines advanced by the governor this year give school districts the option of forgoing a public vote on the next year's school budget if local school tax increases don't exceed 2 percent, and if the election for school board candidates is moved to November. The board had earlier in February decided to move the …

Afterward, the $93.266 million school budget, which no longer needs voter approval, will be considered for final adoption by the school board. 2012-13 School Budget Faces Final Vote on Monday

$93.26-million budget to go before Board of Education for final approval, during first year that proposed budget will not be placed on a public ballot.

The proposed 2012-13 school budget, which no longer needs voter approval, will go for a final vote on Monday night before the Board of Education. The board will consider whether to approve a $93,266,156 budget that includes a taxpayers' contribution of $75,856,316 at a meeting scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the William Annin Middle School cafeteria. The county already has approved the spending plan, and the school board actually is voting on the tax levy, said School Business Administrator Nick Markarian. The proposed budget includes a two percent increase in the general fund budget — which the local school board must stay under in order to avoid a public ballot on the local school tax amount — that would add $182 onto an average township…

School Budget Details, End of Midterms & Finals, on Monday Agenda

Bernards board of education set to present 2012-13 school budget in detail, and discuss whether midterms and finals should end at Ridge High School.

The Bernards Township Board of Education is scheduled on Monday to examine the issue of whether midterms and finals at Ridge High School should be replaced with tests at the end of each marking period. School officials also are set to give a detailed presentation on the proposed 2012-13 school budget at Monday night's meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. in the William Annin Middle School cafeteria. A draft of next year's school budget, with a 2 percent spending increase, already was introduced by the school board in late February. In agreeing to a recent state option to move the school election to November, the Board of Education now can vote to approve school budgets that do not exceed a 2-percent cap without placing the school tax spending …

Martha -- The mid-terms and finals don't prepare our Ridge students for college; the curriculum does. Furthermore, the current mid-terms and finals are not the best assessments of what was taught; in college professors spend the time to create assessments that are appropriate for the class, rather than using exams from previous years or other professors.   more ›

Bernards School Budget Introduced With 2% Hike

New state guidelines for districts moving school elections to November mean that residents wouldn't vote on school budget to be supported by $75.8 million in local school taxes.

The Bernards Board of Education on Monday introduced a proposed $93 million budget for the 2012-13  school year that, if approved by the county and a final vote of the school board on March 26, would call for $75,856,316 to be raised by local school taxes. The budget draft would raise tax spending by two percent, schools Business Administrator Nick Markarian said in a presentation outlining the introduced budget. Since the school board voted earlier this month to move school elections to November, no separate ballot is needed for the school budget if the proposed budget remains within the 2-percent cap, school officials said. If given approval by the Board of Education, the proposed budget would raise taxes during 2012 by about $182 on an …
