On the 11th year following the World Trade Center disaster that affects so many, a parent urges board to commemorate the occasion.
There are few among us adults for whom the date September 11 will ever be the same. Whether or not we officially attended or were part of a moment of silence on that day, it's probably safe to say that we all paused to recall exactly what we were doing, and what came afterward, on that sunny September morning in 2011. That is especially true in a community where some 20 residents lost their lives, by one count. And that doesn't include those who spent endless hours agonizing while they were unable to contact loved ones, those with family members or friends lost in the attack. And even those, myself included, for which a way of life changed when previously carefree east-coast-to-west-coast flight procedures inalterably stopped on that date…

School Board members informally agree that in future years recognition be given to event that affected so many in Bernards Township.
Township mother Stacy Lettie of Spencer Road, who said she has three children in Bernards Township schools, said she was speaking on behalf of many mothers in the community when she said she found it "shocking" that the schools didn't conduct a moment of silence or provide across-the-board teaching about Sept. 11, 2001. Addressing the Board of Education on Monday night, Lettie said the event "shapes all aspects of their lives" she said of the students. Later during the meeting, board members informally agreed they would like to see a moment of silence instituted in Bernards Schools on Sept. 11 in future years. Sept. 11, 2001 was also a day that took the lives of about 20 Bernards Township residents, depending on how residency was counted. …

Eleven years later, the 39 from Somerset, and others who lost lives, in residents' thoughts.
Somerset County held its annual ceremony Tuesday to honor the memory of those who lost their lives 11 years ago on 9/11, complete with a wreath-placing and the reading of the names of the 39 residents who died that day. The ceremony, which was held in front of the county's 9/11 memorial on Main Street in Somerville, began with a ringing of the bell at 8:46 a.m., the time that the first plane hit the tower 11 years ago. "We offer a prayer for the individuals who perished," said freeholder Patricia Walsh, who led the ceremony. "That day was just like today, blue sky and sunshine." "It began without a hint of the horrors to come," she added. Jacqueline LaBracio, a Bernardsville resident who works for the county, brought her own flag to the …

Editor's Note: The following is the written version of Bernards Mayor John Malay's speech at the Sept. 11 dedication of the 9/11 firefighters memorial, unveiled on Sunday at the Liberty Corner firehouse. Malay was keynote speaker. His speech, and some of the other speakers and music, was videotaped by the Basking Ridge Patch at the event. Good afternoon. Thank you for inviting me to speak on this occasion. As we all know, the facts are these. Ten years ago today America suffered the worst attack on its home soil since Pearl Harbor precipitated us into World War II. 9/11 launched its own war: against a terrorist conspiracy targeting the United States and its people. More than 2,700 people lost their lives on 9/11 in New York City, 746 from …

More than 300 cub, boy and girl scouts from throughout New Jersey were invited to stand on the first and third base lines while area firefighters held a large American flag over the pitcher's mound as Isabelle Stein sang the Star Spangled Banner.
Ridge High School will observe a moment of silence in honor of Sept. 11, 2001 and its victims at about 8:20 a.m. on Monday.
Bernards Township students had only been back in school for two full days before the 10th anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, and so had little time to address the subject. On Monday, Ridge High School — where some of the students lost parents or other relatives in the terror attack a decade earlier — will observe a moment of silence to honor those victims and recall 9/11, said Kristin Fox, K-12 social studies supervisor for the Bernards Township school system. The observation will take place at about 8:20 a.m., before the start of second period, Fox said. Curricular topics related to 9/11 are found throughout the social studies curriculum at the secondary level., Fox said. "The district will be commemorating the 10th anniversary of 9/11 in …

The speakers, musicians and other presenters at the Liberty Corner Fire Company's public unveiling of a 9/11 memorial that was a year in the making became a touching gathering place for a community that remembers the events of Sept. 11, 2001 all to well. The Basking Ridge Patch captured some of the comments and moments from the ceremony, held on noon on Sunday. While most of the memorial is complete, additional landscaping and other work needs to be done. Bricks are still on sale for $100 apiece to fund the remainder of the public piece, topped with a piece of steel from the World Trade Center site, to help complete the job. For more information, visit the Liberty Corner Fire Company website.

Editor's Note: The following story was submitted to the Basking Ridge Patch by Juliana Tobin, a Ridge High School junior who also is features editor of The Devil's Advocate school newspaper. She said she previously was part of a 9/11 Student Journalism Project at Rutger's University, and had an opportunity to interview family members of 9/11 victims. Below is her article: On September 11, 2001, Herb and Todd Ouida, father and son, left for train station and headed toward the World Trade Center, where they worked every day. Spontaneously, due to the fair weather, Herb had chosen to take the ferry instead of the train tht morning; he and his son had gone separate ways to the office. “Have a great day sweetheart”, he said, not knowing that …

Instead of a moment of silence- which is a synonym for prayer, why can't students create projects or do some community service or have guest speakers or ...This should be an educational opportunity. Moments of silence? How about something positive and enlightening? What about making a plan to have a large school representation at the Tunnel to Towers Run? How about having classes plant flowers or…   more ›
