Supermarket in Somerset Hills shopping center empty of customers after clearing out merchandise with discounts.
If you've been putting off your chance to drop by at the old A&P in Bedminster to pick up some bargains or say goodbye to longtime employees, you're out of luck. As promised, the supermarket off Washington Valley Road and Route 202/206, which once was alone in serving a large part of the Somerset Hills, was officially closed by Friday, March 1. A sign posted on two of the windows of the empty store thanked customers, with a notice that said, "It has been our privilege to serve this community for the past 46 years." The parking lot was nearly empty, but a few people stopped by to take a look for themselves. A week ago, some of the shoppers picking up merchandise discounted by as much as 80 percent said they would miss having the less-…

Some shoppers say they will miss the Bedminster supermarket, open for decades, as A&P empties out in final days.
Former Bedminster Mayor Bob Holtaway recalls flying out of Somerset Hills Airport in 1972 and, if memory serves him correctly, the A&P Supermarket in Bedminster already was there. Holtaway said he believes the A&P, which now has a final closing date of March 1, moved into the Somerset Hills Shopping Center in the late 1960s. "It's an old store," Holtaway said. Compared with other A&P supermarkets, such as those in Basking Ridge and Warren, it's also a small store, he said. Still, Holtaway said many local residents liked having a supermarket where they could pick up a loaf of bread or milk at prices somewhat lower than newer, gourmet supermarkets. While many say they welcome a new market and plans for a refreshing update for the entire …

Basking Ridge store is 'definitely' staying open.
The A&P supermarket, a longtime tenant at its location off Route 206 in Bedminster, is due to close on Feb. 23, as the Somerset Hills Shopping Center makes plans for an update and possible expansion. The store was covered on Friday with signs saying that merchandise within was being discounted by between 10 to 50 percent, with all sales final. A&P 'definitely' remaining open in Basking Ridge However, the larger, more modernized A&P supermarket at Dewy Meadow Village off King George Road in Basking Ridge is "definitely" remaining open, said Jules Leopold, manager at that store. "We are not closing the store," Leopold said on Saturday. He said that the other A&P in Bedminster is closing because that supermarket's lease had expired. Judy …

It seems like there is a special day for just about everything these days and the donut is no exception. National Donut Day is Friday and in honor of their big day, donut shops across the nation — including the Dunkin' Donuts in Bernards Township — have specials on donuts. For a free Dunkin' Donuts donut, you'll need to purchase a beverage (hot or cold), according to their "Behind the Beans" blog. The chain officially says that they'll hand out one free donut of your choice "while supplies last." (Could Dunkin' Donuts ever really run out of donuts?) As of late morning, Trupti Dave at the Dunkin' Donuts in The Hills said the shop had handed out about four times as many donuts as usual — but there were still plenty left. The bakery manager …

I don't know if it was corporate HQ or local management, but that store was run into the ground years ago...could have been a real asset. Instead, we're left with King$, which, while high quality, is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than A&P was, even for staples like milk. Sure, if you're living large, making $200K+, who cares if the roast beef is $14/lb, but there are a few average folk in the area…   more ›
