Cats and Dogs Can Be Best Friends — Or Yours!

These adoptable pets could be your next best friend — and possibly each other's.

In the real world, of course, cats and dogs live together all the time—too often in shelters for homeless animals, and all these cats and dogs need is a home to live with someone in. If any of the featured pets interest you, contact the rescue groups below. Nearly all of the adoptable pets have had all necessary vaccinations and are neutured. A Puppy Named Upton O'Good

Featured adoptable dogs in this week's column come with fanciful monikers.

With a name like Upton O'Good, this bulldog pup only needs a bowler hat to complete the picture...but he's described as a playful and gentle pup. This week's roundup focuses on dogs with names that are fanciful...but seem somehow incongruous with the dogs they're attached to—what do you think? Could you imagine these pooches would come running if you called out their names? Regardless of what the name is, though, they will all make fine pets, perhaps your best friend—if you are considering a new pet, adopting a homeless dog or cat is the best way to go. Contact the rescue groups below for information about any of the featured dogs—or inquire about other pets they may have available for adoption. St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, located …

Adoption is for Horses, Too

The Friends of Lord Stirling Stable are seeking homes for horses.

Though there are many dogs and cats in need of homes, thousands of other animals are also in need of care—from snakes to birds, if someone has one as a pet, odds are others tried it too and found the animals weren't right for them. Incredibly, that includes horses, one of the smartest of all domesticated animals. Adopting a horse will require more consideration than some other animals—you'll need to either have a stable or be able to afford a place for your horse. But the joys of providing loving care to a horse are no less than a smaller pet—and can be even more rewarding. Lord Stirling Stable often seeks homes for horses kept at the stable and used for teaching programs. If you're interested in learning more about adopting horses from …

Adopt Your Hero

These homeless pets look a bit like Rin Tin Tin — and just might turn out to be a hero, too.

The story of Rin Tin Tin may seem one ony Hollywood could write, but for fans of Geman Shepherds, it's not hard to believe. Rin Tin Tin was a homeless dog, found on a battlefield during World War I who became a Hollywood hero. Your adopted best friend may not have the chance to save a life as Rin Tin Tin did with regularity—but you can count on your best friend when you're in need. Tell us your story of a loyal pet Anyone who's ever had one of this breed (and of course, other pets) know that they are extremely generous in giving loyalty. What stories do you have of your pet's loyalty? For more information on any of the featured Rin Tin Tin-alikes and other potential heroes, contact the rescue groups below. In a small way, you also may …

When I was little, my neighbor had a German shepherd, "King." King was a little lonely, but of course I enjoyed playing with him. Sometimes, when my mom called me to come inside, I'd run over to King. Supposedly, I crawled into King's doghouse once when I was about to get in trouble. There was NO WAY King was going to hand me over to a mother who must have looked at least a little angry. You lost…   more ›

A Reunion of Formerly Homeless Pets

Local rescue group is organizing an event for the pets they've placed in new homes.

Warren's Rawhide Rescue has helped hundreds of people find pets from among the homeless animals they've rescued. On April 29, some of those pets—and people—will meet again at a special "Alumni Day." "We’re having an artist give dog sketches, a 'Free Style' doggie dancing demo, a dog walk, and a craft market," Laurie Green, of Rawhide Rescue, said.  The event will be held at Colonial Park, in Franklin, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There's no charge, so feel free to stop by and meet some of the dogs and people who've benefitted by adopting a homeless pet. Some of the presentations at Alumni Day will be sponsored by Camp Bow Wow, the daycare and overnight "camp" in Bridgewater. "For the upcoming Alumni Day, besides promoting the event, Camp will be…

Adopt a Pet with a Biblical Name

You might be reminded of the Easter and Passover holidays all year long if you adopt a pet with a Biblical name!

The Book of Proverbs tells us, “Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast." But many animals end up mistreated, uncared for or homeless, and it's up to local rescue groups to help them. This week, we're featuring pets with Biblical names (with some liberties taken) seeking homes in the area—if you would like to learn more about any of this week's featured pets, contact the groups below. Lifeline Animal Rescue, Inc. is located at 16 Mount Bethel Road, in Warren. To inquire about their dogs, send an email to LifelineInfo@aol.com Rawhide Rescue is also located in Warren.
