Some area pharmacies are expecting more vaccines to arrive, but don't know when.
Deaths caused by influenza in 2013 reached epidemic levels late last week, according to a report in the New York Times, but the government-run Center for Disease Control (CDC) says it may have peaked. Either way, the organization says those who have yet to receive a flu shot should still do so, as the current outbreak continues to work its way through the country. The height of flu season is February, according to the CDC. Even before Somerset County issued an announcement last Friday that a Somerset County resident was this year's first confirmed case of West Nile Virus, the Bernards Township Health Department issued a warning and tips for preventing the mosquito-borne disease. While organizations such as the Skin Cancer Foundation offers preventative tips, the Bernards Township Health Department is again offering its annual skin cancer screening for member towns' residents to encourage early detection. Residents of Bernards and member towns of the Bernards Township Health Department are asked to register beginning next Monday, April 16, to take part in the regional health department's annual comprehensive health screening at a reduced cost. The health screening includes a blood test, urinalysis, stool blood test and blood pressure check.
