Man, Granddaughter Rescued from Capsized Kayak on Passaic River

Bernards police officer and Liberty Corner 1st assistant fire chief conduct rescue in rushing Passaic River.

A Basking Ridge man and his 4-year-old granddaughter were pulled from the swiftly moving current of the Passaic River Sunday by a Bernards Township police officer and Liberty Corner 1st Assistant Fire Chief Peter Aprahamian, as his daughter waited on the riverbank after managing to get her kayak out of the rushing water, police said. Both rescuers risked their own safety by wading into the rushing waters to return the struggling kayakers safely to the shoreline, said Bernards police Chief Brian Bobowicz. The chief said township Sgt. Glen Amerman had been called to the section of the Passaic River between Haas Road and South Maple Avenue after receiving a report of stranded kayakers at about 2:45 p.m. Sunday. When he arrived, Amerman found …

Was it necessary to bring little 4 year old on the Kayak? Again, Common Sense would tell you "no" after all the RAIN we had. Personally, I know first hand that not everyone was wearing a life jacket. They put the first responders at risk of death. Dopes.   more ›

Lifesaving Moves, Drug Arrests, Other Actions Cited in Bernards Police Awards

Entire department's involvement in responding to Superstorm Sandy is recognized by chief during awards.

Bernards Township Police Chief Brian Bobowicz cited examples of exemplary police work during the annual police awards ceremony held this week before the Township Committee, pointing to everything from decisions that saved lives, drug arrests and — inarguably — the massive response to Superstorm Sandy that left roads blocked and virtually all of the township without power. Although he named two officers as his own "chief's choice" for awards, Bobowicz said the entire department, working in tandem with elected officials and other township employees, took time away from their own families to respond to the needs of Bernards Township residents in the aftermath of Sandy. He noted that one police sergeant had continued working after injuring his…

Permanent Drug Drop Box Installed at Bernards PD

All county residents can dispose of unused, expired and potentially dangerous medications at Bernards police headquarters.

A permanent "drop box" where the public can discard unused, expired and potentially hazardous medications has been installed at Bernards Township Police headquarters at 1 Collyer Lane, to be open whenever the police department building is staffed. It is intended to serve the entire area, including other towns in the Somerset Hills. Information printed on the box specifies what medications can be accepted and those that are not. For example, medications with needles and liquids are not accepted through the program. Once collected, the medications are destroyed, at no cost to taxpayers, by Morristown-based Covanta Energy, a nationwide operator of energy from waste and renewable energy facilities, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's…

3 Bernards Residents Were Victims of Identity Theft

Arrests of 11 people from Passaic County, with one from South Carolina, involved Bernards Township detectives.

Three Bernards Township residents were among the more than 70 people who made reports to 30 police departments within the last year or so that they were the victims of identity theft, prompting a statewide investigation that led to the arrest of 11 people earlier this month, authorities said. Bernards Township Police Detective William Seiple on Tuesday said the identity theft incidents involving the township residents began in December 2012. Since the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office just announced the arrests at the beginning of May, Seiple said there has been no money returned to those who apparently were the victims of fraud. Ten of those arrested were from Passaic County, mostly Paterson, with one from South Carolina. Seiple said he …

4 Basking Ridge Teens Injured in Car Crash

Four taken to hospital, one with head injury, after single-car accident, police said.

Four Basking Ridge teens, ages 16 and 17, were taken to the hospital following a one-vehicle crash on Valley Road at 12:27 a.m. Saturday morning that left one of the passengers with a head injury, said Bernards Township police. Police said the passenger, who was one of five in the vehicle, remained in Morristown Medical Center as of early Monday afternoon, but that no information was available on the teen's condition.  Bernards police Lt. Ted Reese said a 17-year-old Basking Ridge resident was driving a 2005 Honda with five passengers, all from Basking Ridge, and lost control of the car while heading north on Valley Road in the area of Heritage Court.  Police said the vehicle apparently swerved into the southbound lane before spinning back…

Exactly. Let the person whose teenage child is perfect cast the first stone. Just because the driver had passengers in the car does not mean the parents allowed or condoned it. Teenagers will always push the envelope. I hope the hospitalized passenger fully recovers and that this ends up being a lesson learned.   more ›

Swarm Of Bees Escapes From Truck In Bernards

State beekeepers help recover bees reportedly let loose in area.

A tractor trailer carrying bee hives from Florida to Maine lost some of its cargo Monday morning, Bernards Township police said. State beekeepers remained on North Maple Avenue, where the trailer had stopped after pulling off Route 287, in full suits and equipment long after the truck had departed. The tractor trailer had pulled onto the southbound lane of North Maple Avenue near the Verizon bridge after the load of beer hives shifted in the back of the truck at about 7:45 a.m., Bernards Township police said. Some of the boxed bee hives apparently slid off the truck, photos from the scene showed. The accident initially was reported as a disabled truck, but the truck was not disabled, according to police. The beekeepers who responded to …

Three-Car 'Accordion' Accident on North Maple Ave.

Third car in line hits two others stopped and heading to play volleyball at Southard Park.

Bernards Township Police and rescue squads from both Basking Ridge and Liberty Corner headed to a three-car pile up on North Maple Avenue last Friday afternoon in which the third car reportedly hit two others with occupants who told police they were heading to a game of volleyball at Southard Park. Instead, police said, four people involved in the accident were taken to the hospital to be checked for neck and back pain following the accident, reported at 4:08 p.m. last Friday. According to police, all three cars were heading south on North Maple, when the first two stopped to make a lefthand turn into Southard Park. A third vehicle, driven by 25-year-old Caroline Meyers of Warren Township, apparently hit the two stopped vehicles from …

Another Burglary with Jewelry Theft Reported in Basking Ridge

Resident says cash and jewelry said to be taken from Watchung Drive home in The Hills.

Bernards Township police say a Watchung Drive resident in The Hills who was gone from his home all day last Saturday returned to find a back door open and cash and jewelry reportedly missing from the master bedroom. The resident reportedly told police he left the home at about 7:30 a.m. that day, and returned at 10 p.m. that night. Upon returning, the resident noticed that a patio door in the kitchen was open, police said. The resident looked more closely and reportedly found that the lock was broken and door appeared to have been shouldered open. The resident then noticed that drawers in the closet in the master bedroom had been pulled open, the police report said. The resident reported to police that jewelry and some cash had been taken…

Police Still Piecing Together Car, Motorcycle Collision

Drivers offer different versions of Saturday accident, police say.

Bernards Township police say that a Lexus turning left on Mount Airy Road struck a motorcycle that was trying to pass along the left side of the slowed vehicle, but neither driver had been ticketed as of Thursday. Police report that both vehicles were heading north on Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge on Saturday afternoon when the Lexus, driven by a 17-year-old juvenile from Basking Ridge, apparently slowed to make a lefthand turn on Canterbury Way. The driver of the motorcycle, 52-year-old Robert Sander of the Stirling section of Long Hill Township, reportedly then tried to pass the car on the left, said Police Lt. Ted Reese. The police report says the motorcycle was then struck as the Lexus driver was turning left. Reese said on Thursday…
