250 Bags of Heroin Seized in I-78 Traffic Stop, Authorities Say

Two Phillipsburg residents arrested, one held in county jail.

Two Phillipsburg residents were arrested Tuesday on multiple drug-related charges after 250 bags of heroin, a marijuana cigarette and other drug paraphernalia were found during a motor vehicle stop on Interstate 78 in Bernards Township, county and township authorities said. Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano and Bernards Township Police Chief Brian Bobowicz announced the arrests of Matthew Castiglia, 27, and Christine Synnott, 26, of Phillipsburg. According to the county prosecutor's office, at about 3:46 p.m. Tuesday afternoon the chief pulled over a 2001 Hyundai Accent being driven by Synnott along I-78 after the vehicle allegedly was impeding traffic by failing to keep right. Whitenack Road Reopening Just After 3 p.m. Friday

Wires down close road for hours on snowy day.

Whitenack Road was due to open just minutes after 3 p.m. on Friday after being closed at the intersection of Baltursol Way on Friday morning and early afternoon for a total period of several hours following an accident that knocked down utility wires, according to police. The road remained closed south of Annin Road while power cable and phone companies still were working to clear the road, said Bernards Township Police. Police earlier said wires were down after a few fender benders earlier in the morning. A telephone pole was knocked down during an accident, the township website said.

Bernards Township Police Re-accredited; Reduces Insurance Liability

Assessment of 112 standards results in renewal of accreditation status.

Bernards Township Police Chief Brian Bobowicz and the Bernards Township Committee have announced that the Bernards Township Police Department has achieved Law Enforcement Accreditation status through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. The award was the culmination of a two-day on-site assessment by NJSACOP assessors, according to the police department. Re-accreditation for the department, initially awarded in November 2007, was given again at a hearing on Feb. 14 in Princeton, said the news release from Bobowicz. Somerset-Hunterdon Burglary Probe Leads to Man's Arrest

Multi-county task force announces arrest of Readington man.

A Hunterdon County man has been arrested on burglary, theft and weapons charges as a result of an investigation by a task force of law agencies in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties. Thirty-two-year-old James Defazio, of Readington, is accused of burglarizing several homes and being in possession of a stolen handgun. The investigation was conducted by law enforcement officials in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, including police from Bernards Township and Hillsborough, prosecutors for both counties said on Thursday. Although Bernards police were part of the investigating team, Bernards Lt. Bernards Police Investigating Two Burglaries in Same Neighborhood

Break-ins reportedly took place in same time frame in two homes in neighborhood by train station off West Oak Street.

Township Police are investigating and also comparing notes with other law enforcement agencies regarding two reported burglaries of homes within the same time frame in a northern Basking Ridge neighborhood bounded by West Oak Street and North Finley Avenue, said Sgt. Mike Voorhees. According to Bernards police records, someone forced into a home on Lee Place near the railroad tracks at some time between 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 6. The homeowner discovered the break-in upon returning home, and notified police. An undetermined amount of cash and jewelry appears to have been taken from a bedroom, Voorhees. Bernards OKs 4-Year Police Contract: UPDATED

Experienced officers would receive average annual increases of 1.66 percent, said township administrator.

Despite prolonged negotiations that went beyond the expiration of the previous contract, negotiators for police and the Township Committee thanked each other for the process of reaching a four year settlement, retroactive to the beginning of 2012, that covers through the end of 2015. The contract with Bernards Township's police unions, approved by the Township Committee at Tuesday's meeting, provides an average increase of 1.66 percent for the officers at the upper levels of the salary guide, said Township Administrator Bruce McArthur. The pact covers 37 officers, including supervisors but not Chief Brian Bobowicz, who is the 38th member of the local police department, McArthur said. A Warren County man has been identified as the driver of a utility truck crushed by a falling tree on Mount Airy Road Thursday afternoon on Mount Airy Road in Bernards Township, police said. Douglas McKay, 55, of Phillipsburg, was driving south along the roadway at about 3 p.m. when the large tree apparently swayed in the wind before breaking and falling on top of his vehicle, Bernards Township Police Chief Brian Bobowicz said in a release on Friday morning. McKay, a longtime employee of HW Alward Inc., had just left the facility at 161 Mount Airy Road in Bernardsville and was alone driving a company truck, a 1999 Ford utility vehicle, the release said. Man Killed in Mount Airy Road Accident in Bernards

Longtime employee of Bernardsville construction company killed after tree fell on truck.

A longtime employee for a Bernardsville construction company was killed Thursday afternoon when his utility truck was crushed by a tree that fell on his vehicle on Mount Airy Road in Bernards Township, police said. The employee of HW Alward Construction was killed in the accident that closed the roadway for nearly four hours, Bernards Township Police Chief Brian Bobowicz said. The victim's identity was not immediately released. The road was closed from shortly after 3 p.m. to about 6:45 p.m., Bobowicz said. Car Snaps Pole in Early Thursday Mishap

No injuries reported, authorities say.

An early morning motor vehicle accident on Thursday on Valley Road in Bernards Township snapped a utility pole but resulted in no injuries, according to authorities. Bernards Township Police Lt. Michael Voorhees said the accident involved one car, which received heavy front-end damage. However, he said there were no injuries in the mishap, reported at about 5 a.m. The original report on this came in as happening on Arbor Circle, but police updated the information. Along with police, he said the Liberty Corner First Aid Squad responded to the scene. He said no further details were available as of mid-day Thursday. Foot Chase Result of Man Thinking He Was Wanted, Cops Say

Pompton Plains resident fled traffic stop after believing he had outstanding warrants, according to report.

A Pompton Plains man allegedly fled after a motor vehicle stop Thursday afternoon after he mistakenly believed police would find outstanding warrants when running a computer check on his license, according to Bernards Township police. Michael Horan, 32, was charged with hindering apprehension, the township police report said. His wife, Sarah Horan, 32, a passenger in the car, was charged with obstruction of justice. The couple was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, township police said.
