$600K Sandy Bill Reimbursement Sought in Bernards

Township to meet with federal emergency management agency representative in early January, administrator says.

Bernards Township already has filed an application with the Federal Emergency Management Agency seeking reimbursement for extra manpower and cleanup following Sandy's strike on Oct. 29, and eventually expects about 75 percent of that cost to come back, Township Administrator Bruce McArthur said. McArthur again said the township already has spent or is committed to spending in the neighborhood of about $600,000 for overtime costs related to the storm, department of public works cleanup measures, the costs of keeping the Pill Hill reycling center open extra days to accept storm debris, the cost of hiring outside tree crews and debris haulers and debris disposal. Sidewalk, Storm Inlet Repairs Approved for $145K

Intention is to complete improvements before snow season.

Two contracts totaling almost $145,000 were awarded on Tuesday by the Bernards Township Committee for the repair of storm inlets and any damaged or buckled sidewalks throughout the township, with the goal of completing the work "before the snow flies." The Township Committee awarded two contracts, with the larger being $110,030, both to DM Fernandes, LLC, in Cartaret. That contract calls for the repair of broken or buckled sidewalks where needed, said Township Administrator Bruce McArthur. A second contract, also awarded to DM Fernandes, approves the spending of up to $34,590 for storm inlet repairs. Work will be undertaken at various locations throughout the township, with the goal of replacing approximately 1,400 square yards of sidewalk…
