Township making fourth try at hiring contractor to resurface and repair padlocked roller hockey rink at Harry Dunham.
Bernards Township officials are moving ahead with a fourth try at obtaining an acceptable job proposal to resurface and to repair drainage at a roller hockey rink, locked up for about two years due to a cracking asphalt surface. The Township Committee last week rejected a third set of bids for exceeding a budget of $175,000. Now the municipality has placed an advertisement for a fourth set of bids, due to be filed at the Bernards Township municipal building by next Wednesday, July 11, according to Township Administrator Bruce McArthur. The Township Committee would be responsible for deciding whether to award a contract to install a new asphalt surface on the closed hockey rink, as well as addressing a supposed underlying drainage problem …

Bernards Township engineer said township officials mulling bids for repair of hockey rink closed for two years.
The Township Committee could at its next meeting, June 26, consider awarding a contract to repair the closed and cracked hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park that has been padlocked for about two years, Township Engineer Tom Timko said. The third set of bids for a proposed project to fix drainage and put a new asphalt surface was anticipated in late April, with the expectation that a contract might be awarded in May, township officials said in early April. However, at the end of April, township resident Douglas Wicks—who had complained about the handling of the bid process several times before the Township Committee and also in a letter objecting to the township's move in April to increase the maximum budget for the rink repair to a $175,000—…

Cost bids for overhaul of closed hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park expected to be opened on April 25.
Following multiple meetings at which audience members — particularly resident Doug Wicks — and township officials debated whether an asphalt or tile surface would be best for repairing a cracked and closed hockey rink, the Township Committee on Tuesday night unanimously agreed to plans for an asphalt top over a new drainage system. Township Engineer Tom Timko reminded township officials that at the first of last summer's two failed attempts to obtain a satisfactory bid for the project, the proposal that came in for a tile surface with accompanying drainage work was for $173,000 — even more than the $142,000 figure rejected by the Township Committee at that time. The second set of bids were rejected due to improperly filled out paperwork, …

Editor's Note: The following is from resident Douglas Wicks, addressing the Bernards Township Committee, and regarding the introduction of an ordinance to allocate another $50,000 to repair a hockey rink closed for almost two years at Harry Dunham Park. The ordinance, proposed on Tuesday night, would bring the maximum total for the project to $175,000. Township Committee members and the township engineer have disputed Mr. Wick's conclusions. However, Township Committeeman John Carpenter asked that information for why the township has decided not to use tiles at this time be detailed when the ordinance comes up for a public hearing, scheduled for April 10. To the Editor, To the Township Committee, re: Rink resurfacing [discussion] at open …

Editor's Note: Township officials recently said the municipality will soon bring up again consideration of how to repair the closed roller rink at Harry Dunham Park off Somerville Road in the township's Liberty Corner section. The township twice has failed to obtain acceptable bids for the job of repairing the cracked rink. A copy of this letter was sent to the Bernards Township Committee, Township Engineer Tom Timko and the Bernards Township Recreation Committee, according to the letter writer, Douglas Wicks. To the editor. A recent article indicated that the Harry Dunham roller rink repairs are up for yet another discussion. The article also mentioned that the suggestion for using a tile floor system was dropped from the plans but failed…

"Timko and other township officials also have reminded Wicks that the first set of bids included an alternate proposal for a tile surface and drainage work, which at $173,000 last year was even $30,000 higher than the bid rejected for an asphalt surface with associated drainage work" What Timko forget to mention is that he failed to comply with the manufacturer's engineering standards for the …   more ›
