Veterans Flags Come Down at Town Hall

Flags not claimed by this past weekend will be donated for next year's display.

This year's Field of Honor, a display of flag to honor veterans, went up at the municipal complex in Basking Ridge with little fanfare after Superstorm Sandy, just in time for Veterans Day. Volunteers also made quick work of taking the flags down last weekend. The flags gathered attention this year not only to honor veterans but as pick-me-up after Sandy left the town's residents without power for up to two weeks.  But even without power, the cancellation of a planned ceremony for the placement of Field of Honor flags at town hall on Nov. 4, and a lack of professional help, the flags went up in time for Veterans Day. Along with members of the Bernards Township Beautification Committee, local boy scouts, Ridge High School students and other…

Veterans Day Recognized With Field of Honor Flags

20 volunteers, without ceremony, place flags at Bernards Town Hall in time for Veterans Day.

Hurricane Sandy may have canceled a planned ceremony for the placement of Field of Honor flags at town hall on Nov. 4, but the flags are up in time for Veterans Day. Without fanfare, about 20 volunteers placed 130 flags on the lawn of the municipal complex on Friday. The display will remain up for two weeks, according to Laura Begg, chairwoman of the Bernards Township Beautification Committee and organizer of the event. "This will not only be a keeping a tribute to our veterans alive—and just prior to Veterans Day—but it will likewise assist a battered community in coming together to give some hope and spirit to those who could use it in a very difficult time," Begg said. The flags to honor veterans were pre-purchased by area individuals …

September is Time to Order Field of Honor Flags

Bernards Township Beautification Task Force arranges second annual Field of Honor flag sale and ceremony.

September is the month to order a flag to decorate the lawn of the Bernards Township Municipal Building in downtown Basking Ridge for the second annual Field of Honor to again mark Veterans Day. The Bernards Township Beautification Committee is again organizing the display and will hold a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. on Nov. 4, on the front lawn at the municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane. At that time, attendees may walk through the field to view the flags. Laura Begg, who initiated the program, said that in asking around what people would like to see changed at the ceremony, which last year featured speeches, music and a gathering of community, the most common answer was, "Nothing." Individuals and organizations may buy a limited number…

PHOTOS ADDED: Display of flags dedicated to local veterans and elsewhere will remain on display through Nov. 19.

Furling and unfurling American flags on an upper and lower section of the township municipal complex at 1 Collyer Lane, will remain in place until Nov. 19, in honor of the veterans who will be remembered on Veterans Day. The display of 125 American flags, purchased by local residents with a chance to dedicate them to the veteran or veterans of their choice, was arranged by the Bernards Township Beautification Task Force. The flags will remain where they are until the display is dismanted, and owners can claim their flags on Nov. 19. The flags, which had been placed in neat rows in a display on both an upper and lower field by local Boys and Girl Scouts, were flapping in the wind on Sunday, when members of the public, veterans groups and …
