Devil Morris takes MVP honors as Ridge basketball avenges its one loss of season — to Gill St. Bernard's — in a way that counts.
The Ridge High School boys basketball team hit the courts Saturday looking to avenge their only loss of the 2013 season against the one team that beat them — longtime county rival Gill St. Bernard's from Peapack-Gladstone. Now on the big stage, battling for the Somerset County Championship, Ridge would go on to play a near perfect game for a 69-56 victory against the star-laden and strong Gill squad. Ridge players knew they had to play better than they did just nine days ago when Gill broke their unbeaten streak in a regular season game. Ridge boys basketball now heads to game with Hillsborough in Somerset County semifinals.
The No. 11-ranked Ridge High School boys basketball team put their 21-game winning streak on the line against the pre-season No. 2-ranked Gill St. Bernard's from Peapack-Gladstone on Thursday night at Ridge. Although Ridge kept it close for most of the first half, Gill kept stacking up the points in the second and third quarters, to finally defeat Ridge, 73-56. Playing in front of packed stands, Ridge was led by junior Kevin Doolan Doolan with 15 points, with good performances on the court from seniors Lane Legband (10 points) and Matt Gerrity (9 points). Hoffman scores 30 points and 12 rebounds for Gill St. Bernard's.
The atmosphere was tangible in Tuesday's heated playoff game. The contest was intense and physical. In the end, only one team could win this boys basketball shootout between Gill St. Bernard’s and Bridgewater-Raritan. Gill St. Bernard’s had the last laugh. Dominic Hoffman had a double-double with 30 points and 12 rebounds.
