No arrests yet, five months after three weekly break-ins and trophy thefts at the USGA Museum in Bernards and private club in Bernardsville.
Last May's overnight break-in and theft of two historic golf trophies from the United States Golf Association Museum in Bernards Township, sandwiched between two similar break-ins at the Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville, remain crimes that are being actively investigated, but unsolved, authorities said. Bernards Township Police spend some time every week working on the open case, which resulted in the theft of irreplaceable gold trophies from the nationally known golf museum on Liberty Corner Road, said Police Lt. Somerset Hills Country Club increases reward for information leading to arrest in theft of golf trophies from the club on May 11.
Bernardsville Police Chief Kevin Valentine and Somerset Hills Country Club President R. Kelly Doherty of Bernardsville announced Monday that the reward being offered is increased by $5,000 for an unsolved May thefts of historic golf trophies from the country club in Bernardsville. The Somerset Hills Country Club reward, privately offered, is in addition to a reward already being offered by Somerset County Crime Stoppers Inc., the announcement from the police chief said. Doherty, of Bernardsville, stated, “The trophies are an important part of the club's legacy. The real loss is the historic significance and sentimental value of the trophies." No new incidents reported since three break-ins at golf facilities in May; no new leads in case.
Three break-ins during May that included the theft of golf trophies from the USGA Golf Museum in Bernards Township and the the Somerset Hills Country Club in Bernardsville remain unsolved almost two months later, said authorities for the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office as well as the Bernardsville and Bernards Township police departments. "Nothing new with the USGA," Bernards Township Lt. Mike Voorhees said on Thursday.
