Hockey Rink Construction Ready to Start

After more than two years of being closed, work is finally underway at hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park.

Now that the township's public works department has removed the old asphalt and by last week had laid gravel at the hockey rink being reconstructed at Harry Dunham Park, laying the groundwork for a contractor to come in with a goal of completing the work this year. A few weeks ago, DPW employees removed the cracked asphalt surface that was the reason that the municipal recreational facility had been closed up more than two years ago. By last week, the surface had been smoothed, and gravel had been laid as a base for a future surface, township officials said. The walls around the facility also were removed for repair, and will be reinstalled once the new surface, with plans also for a new drainage system, is complete, according to township …

My observations over the past few weeks show that the rink does not drain as well as the prior rink surface and it now ponds heavily at the east end-something that didn't occur before with the old surface. In my view this whole exercise was a waste of hard earned taxpayer's money because what most responsible people did, when faced with the same cracked surface , overlaid it with the plastic …   more ›

UPDATE: One Proposal For Fourth Try at Hockey Rink Repair

But lawsuit attempts to block the award of a contract.

Township officials have been reviewing the one bid received on Wednesday following Bernards' fourth advertisement for proposals to repair and resurface the cracked and locked-up roller hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park. The bid received by the deadline of 11 a.m. on Wednesday outlined a job proposal for $115,000, said Township Administrator Bruce McArthur. The Township Committee ultimately is responsible for awarding contracts for municipal jobs. However, another legal motion in a continuing legal action by township resident Douglas Wicks asks that a judge halt the township from potentially awarding any bid received on July 11, the Wednesday deadline, and that the bid specifications be rewritten to accept proposals for a tile rather than …

Hockey Rink Repair Contract May be Awarded Soon

Bernards Township engineer said township officials mulling bids for repair of hockey rink closed for two years.

The Township Committee could at its next meeting, June 26, consider awarding a contract to repair the closed and cracked hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park that has been padlocked for about two years, Township Engineer Tom Timko said. The third set of bids for a proposed project to fix drainage and put a new asphalt surface was anticipated in late April, with the expectation that a contract might be awarded in May, township officials said in early April. However, at the end of April, township resident Douglas Wicks—who had complained about the handling of the bid process several times before the Township Committee and also in a letter objecting to the township's move in April to increase the maximum budget for the rink repair to a $175,000—…

Another $50K Approved for Asphalt Hockey Rink

Cost bids for overhaul of closed hockey rink at Harry Dunham Park expected to be opened on April 25.

Following multiple meetings at which audience members — particularly resident Doug Wicks — and township officials debated whether an asphalt or tile surface would be best for repairing a cracked and closed hockey rink, the Township Committee on Tuesday night unanimously agreed to plans for an asphalt top over a new drainage system. Township Engineer Tom Timko reminded township officials that at the first of last summer's two failed attempts to obtain a satisfactory bid for the project, the proposal that came in for a tile surface with accompanying drainage work was for $173,000 — even more than the $142,000 figure rejected by the Township Committee at that time. The second set of bids were rejected due to improperly filled out paperwork, …

I have reviewed the email sent to Mr. Carpenter that was the focus of the diatribe we heard last Tuesday night about the tile manufacturer's and how the firm might no be able to fulfill its commitment for its 5+% year guarantee. In her letter Gwen Vogt declared: I am an accountant by training and wondered about the size and stability of his company. I asked if he provided financials to his …   more ›
