Bernardsville Power Restorations Awaited on Monday

Mayor is told power company will work 'through the night' to complete restoration, but he doubts Sunday midnight goal will be met.

The number of Bernardsville households left without power was down to about 227 out of 3,500 JCP&L customers on Sunday evening, but Borough Mayor Lee Honecker said that, two weeks after Hurricane Sandy, he considers that number unacceptable. Monday update On Monday at about 10:30 a.m., the JCP&L website said that 148 Bernardsville customers remained without power, as were 83 customers in Bedminster. Honecker said he drove around the borough prior to Sunday's 4 p.m. conference call with Jersey Central Power and Light and found that the Twin Lakes area, including Hillside Avenue, Lakeview Drive and other nearby streets appeared untouched by restoration efforts. Although he said that some crews had been spotted around Round Top Road and the …

Power Returns to Bernardsville; Voting at Bernards High

Somerset Hills schools closed Tuesday. All districts to vote at Bernards High, which also remains open as a regional shelter.

Bernardsville Mayor Lee Honecker said the downtown section of the borough, including the Bernardsville Public Library, has power back on as of Monday, and the numbers are expected to climb for the next few days. However, no Somerset schools had power back as on Monday, and school will remain closed on Tuesday, said Bernardsville Police Chief Kevin Valentine. "It's really a safety issue," especially given condition of roads, he said. Moreover, he said that schools must wait 24 hours after regaining power to test systems and prepare for the reopening. Honecker said that an estimated 400 were initially logged as having power returned. The area with power includes the "Little Italy" section near Bernards Avenue. Meanwhile, Honecker said all …

Food & Water for Somerset Hills Area; Power Co. in Bernardsville

Town still without power as of shortly before 1 p.m., but mayor says work is being done.

Bernardsville Mayor Lee Honecker said shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday that he estimated at least 30 power company trucks were seen working in the borough, and access had been created for borough homes blocked by wires and trees. At that time, Honecker said that all of the borough remained without power. But he said that JCP&L workers had been seen at the Bernardsville power station. "We are grateful they're here now," Honecker said of the power company. The mayor asked that residents not interfere with workers who are doing their job. He said that workers also had been removing wires and electrical equipment from streets, including at a subdivision blocked by "It's my understanding that access was provided." Borough officials, including …

No Charge For School to Use Bernardsville Field, Mayor Confirms

Honecker says suggestion came from unsolicited report by recreation committee.

Bernardsville Mayor Lee Honecker on Wednesday night assured the Somerset Hills Board of Education that the municipality has no intention of charging the school district to use the turf field at the borough property known as the polo grounds. Honecker said that the borough's recreation committee brought up the idea of renting out the field during a Borough Council meeting, but that that the municipality has no intention of charging rent to the school district. Honecker said the borough is "extremely aware of our reciprocal arrangement" with the school district. He also said such sharing of facilities benefits taxpayers. "We really appreciate that," School Board President Donna Coons said following Honecker's remarks. She said she hoped that…

The Mayor and Council are on the right track. School user fees will simply transfer the cost and make the issue more controversial. In favor or not, we should all be aware that a turf field will not "pay for itself." Local residents will pay for it through some form of tax or user fees.   more ›
