This year, the Bernards Township Memorial Day Parade again will be hosted in Liberty Corner, with the assembled paraders set to step off from the Liberty Corner Firehouse at 95 Church St. at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27. The Bernards Township Committee, Bernards police department, Basking Ridge Fire Company and First Aid Squad, Liberty Corner First Aid Squad and Liberty Corner Fire Company will assemble at 9 a.m. at the firehouse, according to information from the fire company. Number of suitable parking spots and traffic planning still up for discussion regarding proposed mosque in Liberty Corner.
In a continuing back and forth over how many parking spaces would be needed at a proposed mosque at the edge of Church Street in Liberty Corner Village, an expert hired by the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge put the number at 60, a steep reduction from the 110 recommended by township professionals. The Bernards Township Planning Board, which has been considering the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's application to build the 4,200-square-foot house of worship since last summer, had asked Henry Ney to return with more information at the most recent hearing, on Thursday night. Now, Ney has been asked to return again at the next board discussion on the proposal, scheduled for June 4. Among other requests, the traffic expert has been asked to…

Meanwhile, resolution to memorialize Planning Board's recommendations regarding Millington Quarry due on May 7.
A proposal to build at 4,200-square-foot mosque to serve the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge is on the agenda to be back before the Bernards Township Planning Board for the first time since February. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night in the courtroom at the municipal building at 1 Collyer Lane in Basking Ridge. The number of parking spaces that should be required at the proposed location on Church Street in Liberty Corner Village was the topic of the past two meetings, and was expected to continue at this meeting. A traffic expert told the Planning Board in early February that his count of how many vehicles actually were parked during the main Friday service at two other mosques in New Jersey indicates that …

Summons issued to one driver for failure to stop and yield at 4-way stop installed last year.
Bernards Township Police said a ticket was issued to a Basking Ridge woman driving east along Liberty Corner Road toward Liberty Corner Village for allegedly failing to stop at the four-way intersection stop with Somerville Road, and allegedly hitting another car in the intersection. The driver of that vehicle, a 2012 Jeep Liberty, apparently ran the stop sign on Liberty Corner Road shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday, according to the police report. The police report said a 2005 Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old Basking Ridge female was crossing the intersection, heading north on Somerville Road in the direction of Harry Dunham Park, when she was struck by the Jeep's driver. Two witnesses said the Honda driver had stopped at the stop sign…

Expert's report counting parked cars during services at other mosques in New Jersey doesn't satisfy Bernards Planning Board.
A traffic expert told the Planning Board on Tuesday that his count of how many vehicles actually were parked during the main Friday service at two other mosques in New Jersey indicates that the proposed mosque in Liberty Corner would need a maximum of 70 spots — not the 110 advised by board professional last month. The board's members did not seem convinced and scheduled the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's traffic engineer to return on April 25 with further information, additional details on certain points in the report and an additional vehicle count for a mosque in South Brunswick. The applicant's original number of parking spaces was 50 for the proposed 4,200-square-foot mosque at 124 Church St. in the Liberty Corner section of …

Discussion before Planning Board also leads back to whether parking is adequate for planned mosque in Liberty Corner.
The architect for a proposed 4,250-square-foot mosque in Liberty Corner village described the exterior of the gray building as fitting in with other structures in the neighborhood — but when it came to the interior, the discussion before the Planning Board on Wednesday once again led to maximum capacity and adequate parking. "I don't want anyone to think this building is out of scale," local architect Dan Lincoln said in describing the proposed mosque that the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge plans to build in place of a 1950s modified ranch at 124 Church St. The new building, about the same size of the older home, which would be demolished, would have most worshippers entering from the rear entrance, according to continuing testimony …

Attorneys for both Bernards Planning Board and Islamic Society advise houses of worship are permitted in residential zone.
Members of the public and the Bernards Planning Board tried on Tuesday to pin down Islamic Society President Ali Chaudry on the number of worshippers who ultimately would attend Friday services at a proposed mosque in Liberty Corner, a number that Chaudry repeatedly estimated at 150 even after about a decade of growth. Upon questioning, Chaudry said that if the number grew larger, the proposed mosque at 124 Church St. could conceivably consider adding a second service for the mosque's the Friday afternoon worship, which he said is the most attended service in the week. Chaudry also said that the proposed 4,200-square-foot new building is expected meet the projected needs of the mosque to serve Muslims who live and work within the Somerset …

Residents also concerned about anticipated number of members.
Bernards Township Planners on Tuesday heard a presentation on a proposed 4,200-square-foot mosque that would be built in place of an existing house at 124 Church St., followed by objections and questions from nearby residents. At times, emotions ran high during the almost three-hour hearing, which was attended by about 50 people and a few Bernards Township police officers. Ali Chaudry, a trustee and president of the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge, had in January offered an informal overview before the Planning Board and public of then-plans to renovate a four-bedroom home on the property. The formal application now before the board outlines a plan to demolish the older house and to replace it with a new 4,200-square-foot mosque. The new …

A new four-way stop at the intersection of Church Street and Somerville Road in Liberty Corner is something that drivers will need to get used to.
A new four-way stop sign is in place at the intersection of Church Street and Somerville Road at the edge of Liberty Corner village, near Harry Dunham Park, and drivers are getting accustomed to the new traffic pattern. The county plan approved earlier this year by the Bernards Township Committee also calls for the removal of turning lanes on Somerville Road. White barricades had been placed in those lanes as of Friday morning, where restriping had indicated that the lanes would no longer be in use. A Bernards Township police car was stationed along Church Street near the intersection as of about 10:30 a.m. on Friday morning. The signs and barricades already had been up the previous day. The intersection previously had stop signs on …

Plans to install four stop signs at all entries to intersection at Church Street and Somerville Road.
The Bernards Township Committee has already approved a county plan to install four-way stop signs for drivers heading in all direction at the intersection of Somerville Road and Church Street. Extra signs and lane alterations are due to be put in place in the spring. The intersection currently has stop signs and solar powered flashing red lights, on both sides of Somerville Road. Traffic along Church Street, which turns into Liberty Corner Road after crossing Somerville Road, now has the right of way. The township's Harry Dunham Park is at the intersection, located at the edge of Liberty Corner village. Turning lanes will be removed from the intersection at the same time that the stop signs are installed, likely next spring, Township …
