Program at Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge provides many advantages for riders, and satisfaction for volunteers.
An adaptive horseback riding program that is both enjoyable and beneficial for developmentally disabled children and adults is scheduled to begin next week at Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge, and the county still is looking for some volunteers to assist the riders. The Somerset County Park Commission Therapeutic Recreation Department and Lord Stirling Stable needs about a half-dozen additional volunteers to assist with the T.R.A.I.L.S (Therapeutic Recreation Adapted Instruction at Lord Stirling) program on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings beginning April 2 and 3, said Dina Trunzo, certified therapeutic recreation specialist and manager of therapeutic recreation for the Somerset County Park Commission. Historic horses prance in 'Airs Above the Ground' performance at Somerset County stable in Basking Ridge.
The county's Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge once again hosted the world famous Hermann's Original Royal Lipizzan Stallions in "Airs Above the Ground Performances" on Friday through Sunday. Nearly 1,000 guests and horse lovers packed the stable's arena for a full house on Sunday afternoon. The 90-minute show featured a number of different routines performed by the horses. The stallions were originally trained for battle and would kick the foot soldiers of the opposing army. The Lipizzan Stallions' spectacular leaps and maneuvers were especially designed to inspire fear in the hearts of those enemy foot soldiers. Accompanying the display was a narrative recounting the history, evolution and contemporary application of the …

Rebel the Pony holds another annual party and invites young and old. Also, canine events.
Sometimes there's just not enough days in the week, but each week we'll give you an idea of something to do to relax, spend time with family and just take some time for yourself. This Sunday, Aug. 19, will be a very special day at the Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable, 256 South Maple Avenue in Basking Ridge. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., family and friends are invited to celebrate “Rebel the Pony's Special Event,” a summer party hosted by a remarkably friendly four-legged character. Rebel is actually a miniature horse who gives lead line pony rides to the smallest of the children who visit Lord Stirling Stable. He is just under 10 hands high, about the size of a St. Bernard. Rebel the Pony and all of his people friends will …

Deer management advisory committee report to be presented to two governmental boards this week, library e-help.
Tuesday's Bernards Township Committee meeting agenda includes acceptance of this year's deer management advisory committee report, which recommends the extension of this year's deer hunting season from mid February thru end of March 2013, as had been done in the winter of 2012. The same report, which said that the deer harvest this year was 12 percent lower this year than the year before, for a number of reasons, is also scheduled to be placed before the Environmental Commission on Monday night. Even with the extended season, the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife reported that 374 deer had been harvested in 2012, compared with 436 in 2011. The report notes that Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease [EHD] infected and killed many deer in the …
