UPDATE: Fall Horseback Riding Lessons to Begin, For 10 Lessons, or 1

Registration will begin Saturday for fall session of riding lessons at Lord Stirling Stable. Single intro ride scheduled for Sept. 4.

Starting Saturday, the Somerset County Park Commission will conduct registration at Lord Stirling Stable for English-style, balanced seat riding lessons, to begin the week of Sept. 12, and also the mini-workshop program on the stable property at 256 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge. In addition, an introductory ride for those who might want to get on a horse before deciding whether to sign up for more lessons is scheduled for Sept. 4, with walk-in registration to continue through Aug. 31. The full slate of fall lessons is available for juniors (ages 9-17) and adults, and are designed for the absolute beginner through more advanced equestrian levels with jumping experience. More Summer Events at Lord Stirling Parks in Basking Ridge

Cooler evening hour for dog walks; nature walks through September; summer moonlight horse ride.

The ever-popular Saturday Dog Walks at Somerset County Park Commission Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge are being continued through the summer months, although the time has been moved from morning to a cooler evening hour. The event — among others being held at the county park commission's Lord Stirling parks in Basking Ridge — will be hosted on a weekly basis at 7 p.m. by the Friends of Lord Stirling Stable. Check-in time for pets and their owners will begin at 6:45 P.M. every Saturday at the stable at 256 S. Maple Ave. The guided trail walk will commence at 7 p.m. and last for approximately one hour. Try Introductory English-style Riding Lesson at Lord Stirling

Registration underway now for one-session lesson at Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge.

Registration now is underway through next Thursday for those considering English-style riding lessons at Lord Stirling Stables to give it a try with a one-session introductory lesson scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, July 10. The mini-group lesson will be given one of Lord Stirling Stable's instructors, to be followed by a one-hour guided trail ride through the park's trail system. The stable is at 256 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge. The fee is $32 for Somerset County residents and $40 for out-of-county residents. Horse Care Mini-Workshop Offered for Riders and Non-Riders

Registration now open for horse care workshop to begin June 25.

Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge is again offering Mini-Workshop 101 for adults and youth seeking to gain experience and confidence around horses through a combination of non-riding activities and hands-on practice. The workshop is aimed at both riders and non-riders. Starting Saturday, June 25, Equine Mini-Workshop 101 will be held at the Somerset County Park Commission's stable at 256 S. Maple Ave. Classes are due to run from 1 to 3 p.m. for five consecutive weeks. Participants will learn the proper way to safely handle a horse, groom, and tack up.  The parts of the horse, saddle, and bridle are discussed, in addition to horse breeds, colors, and basic horse care.
