Basking Ridge seniors going to Friday's prom receive messages with reminders from township fifth graders.
It would seem to be a plea that's hard to ignore. On Thursday, Ridge High School seniors received letters in their English classes from much-younger classmates, those in fifth grade, pleading with them not to drink, do drugs or drive while intoxicated before, during or after Friday night's prom. The letters come from fifth graders in all of the township's four elementary schools, and are handed out to every senior, said Kathy Kelly, who fills multiple roles in the municipal health department, with the Bernards Township Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse and with the Ridge Against Drugs (R.A.D.) program. 'Dialogue Night' spurs open discussion among professionals, parents and high school students.
"People want to fit in," students want to relieve stress, and, "There is nothing else to do in Basking Ridge." Those were among the most common reasons local teens drink or use drugs, according to a group of Ridge High School teens, who were speaking anonymously. The teens had volunteered to talk openly with the handful of local parents, professionals and members of the Bernards Township Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse who attended Tuesday's "Dialogue Night." The Municipal Alliance has been tackling teen drinking through the "It's 21 For A Reason" campaign. Municipal Alliance discusses plans to hold additional 'Neighborhood Coffees' in the spring, and a 'dialogue' on teens and alcohol use on Tuesday night.
UPDATE: On Tuesday night at 7 p.m., the Bernards Township Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse is scheduled to host a "Dialogue Night" for adults to center on the topic of teen alcohol use, and how to discuss the issue with their children. The evening's discussion — to focus on “It’s 21 for a Reason” initiative, which has a goal of delaying the age of first alcohol use in teens, is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the William Annin Middle School. Small group discussions will center around teen alcohol use, its impact on the developing adolescent brain, and reasonable rules that both teens and adults can agree on.
