The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's updated storm path and rainfall projections show show options for the storm missing the region "rapidly dwindling." According to the report and graphics released Saturday evening by the NOAA's Gary Szatkowski, confidence continues to increase that the region will see very severe impacts from this storm. State bear hunt begins Monday.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection 2011 Bear Hunt begins Monday with hunters in possession of a permit allowed to kill one black bear each. Bears are only allowed to be hunted in specific zones, which include parts of Morris, Sussex, Warren, Somerset, Bergen and Hunterdon counties, extending to the Pennsylvania and New York borders. The six-day hunt, which was also held last year, is designed to help the DEP regulate bear population. According to the DEP, there are about 3,400 black bears living in a 1,000-square mile area north of Route 78 and west of Route 287. The state Department of Environmental Protection is advising residents and outdoor enthusiasts in northern Jersey in areas regularly frequented by black bears, to strictly adhere to guidelines for eliminating or securing potential food sources for the bear during the fall season, when bears feed extensively to build fat layers before hibernation. That includes not putting out trash the night prior to collections, when the bears may be about, the state advised. The DEP also advises washing out trash containers with disinfectant at least once a week to eliminate odors and — if a bear comes back repeatedly — consider obtaining a bear-resistant trash container.
