All phone calls to police will go to centralized Somerset County dispatch service rather than Bernards Township police headquarters.
As of this Friday or next Monday, phone calls to the Bernards Township police will be picked up by a central Somerset County dispatch service rather than a dispatcher at police headquarters on Collyer Lane, township officials said this week. And the goal, according to Township Administrator Bruce McArthur, is for the public to not notice any difference. After the transition, the main Bernards Township police number of 908-766-1122 will reach a phone-tree with the first option being “0” for emergency, an extension that will be hot wired to county dispatch, McArthur said in an email on Wednesday. Says initial investment will reap four to five million dollar savings over several years
The Bernards Township Committee voted unanimously at Tuesday's meeting to approve an ordinance appropriating $600,000 for capital improvements and equipment related to the migration of emergency communications to Somerset County. Committee members expressed agreement tonight that it was the right decision for local taxpayers based on positive results in surrounding towns that already made the switch. During 2012, the Bernards Township Police Department is expecting to make a historic change in its operations by switching its dispatch service to relying on the county's system rather than having dispatchers operate from police headquarters on Collyer Lane. The change requires the township to invest up to $600,000 for an upgraded, higher-frequency emergency communications system that would be compatible with the communications system used by Somerset County, officials said.
