Mount Airy Construction Due to Begin This Week

UPDATE: Replacement of old water main is just first in a series of improvements to be made along county road.

Mount Airy Road, a main route between Bernardsville and Basking Ridge, is due to be closed this week to all but local and school bus traffic as phase one begins for a lengthy project to completely overhaul the road and retaining walls just south of Olcott Square. The construction initially was scheduled to begin on or around this Monday, but the contractor for the project said that the work would start the following Monday, Jan. 14, said Bernardsville Police Lt. Demmings Hoadley. Meanwhile, signs already are out along Mount Airy at intersections with Prospect Street in Bernardsville and at West Oak Street in Basking Ridge warning drivers that the street will be closed to all but local traffic on or around Jan. 7. The New Jersey American …

I hope they don't just draw obviously fake rock-like lines in the new retaining walls. You may have seen this in New Brunswick. I would rather it be plain than look like that.   more ›

Update: Road Repair Traffic Reported Cleared by Exit 30 on Rte. 287N

Late morning back-up seen just south of Interchange 30 off Route 287 in northern Basking Ridge.

Traffic heading north along Interstate 287 in Bernards Township a few miles south of exit 30, in northern Basking Ridge, reportedly was clogged at about 11 a.m. on Thursday morning. However, state police at Somerville barracks said the road work had been cleared as of shortly before 12:30 p.m. The backup was in the vicinity of road repairs at milepost 30.2 on the northbound side of the highway. The heavy congestion reportedly stretched out two to three miles south of that point, until traffic was merged into one lane by the repair location.

Verizon Overpass Work Planned on N. Maple Ave.

Verizon spokespersons say road will not be closed, but seeks to have nighttime work to speed project.

The Verizon Co. plans a major overhaul of its overpass crossing North Maple Avenue near Interstate 287 some time this year, and already has gained Township Committee approval to extend work hours to complete the job more quickly. Lee Gierczynski, a media relations manager for Verizon, on Thursday said the company will request additional permission for overnight work hours for a proposed project to strip off and replace the asphalt after repairing the bridge deck. Gierczynski said that no definite date has been set yet for when work would begin on the company's overpass, which crosses North Maple Avenue between Dolce and Verizon headquarters at 1 Verizon Way. "We haven't finalized the plan," he said on Thursday. But Verizon is anticipating …

UPDATE: Little Bridge, Big Impact If Closed

State plans to replace almost 90-year-old concrete bridge at border of Bernards and Harding townships.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story stated that phone calls to Joe Dee, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, were not immediately returned. Patch did speak with Dee, who was not immediately able to provide the information needed. The article stated the information would be added when available. Thousands of drivers along Route 202 just north of the Olde Mill Inn probably don't even notice the small concrete span they cross right at the Bernards Township border leading in or out of Harding Township, in Morris County. But they likely could become more familiar with the bridge's location if the final pieces in the plan for the project — anticipated to be carried out in 2012 — fall into place. The old, corroded …
