Four Ed. Bd. Candidates Already File; Deadline Tuesday

Updated: Tuesday is the deadline for candidates filing for this November's school board election.

Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. is the new deadline for filing for those who wish to be candidates in this November's election for three available positions on the Bernards Township Board of Education, with four candidates already filing by Tuesday morning. Those who had filed as of Tuesday morning, according to the board office, included incumbents Robin McKeon, on the board since 2009, and Audrey Cohen Sherwyn, seeking to be re-elected to another three-year term. The other two candidates who already had filed paperwork seeking to be included on the November ballot for the school election include Bev Darvin Cwerner, a former board member, and Louis D'Autorio, a longtime resident and 1995 graduate of Ridge High School who said he is making his…

Board of Ed to Discuss Elections, Ridge Bus Dropoff

Public invited to weigh in on two major issues scheduled to be discussed Monday night.

The public has been asked to provide input on Monday night regarding two major issues before the Board of Education: whether to move annual school elections from April to November, and if school buses loaded with Ridge High School students should continue a new dropoff procedure behind the Cedar Hill Elementary School. A majority of Bernards Township Board of Education members said on Jan. 23 they favor moving annual school elections to November. But board members agreed at that night's meeting they would first like to hear from the public at the scheduled Feb. 13 meeting before taking a final vote. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the William Annin Middle School. "I think it would be fair to give people an opportunity to talk about …

Maybe I'm missing something, but many people have been driving through Homestead Village to drop off and pick up high school kids for well over the last decade, if not decades, as well as to attend events at the high school fields and to use Cedar Hill's parking lots for concerts, etc. The uproar over 15 minutes of 25 additional vehicles is unwarranted, as is the expenditure of millions of …   more ›

Board of Ed Favors Nov. Election, Asks for Public Input

Officials will seek residents' opinion before voting on move.

A majority of Bernards Township Board of Education members on Monday said they favor moving annual school elections to November—but would like to hear from the public at the scheduled Feb. 13 meeting before taking a final vote. "I think it would be fair to give people an opportunity to talk about it," Board Member Elaine Kusel said. She said she views the only negative of the new school election options is that the change could take away the public's right to vote on the annual school budget. The change is new, Kusel said. "I don't think we have to vote on it tonight," she said. The statewide option of moving school budgets from April to November, as outlined in legislation signed last week by Gov. Chris Christie, would allow a school …

Absolutely not!!! I am against the idea of moving the school elections and budget votes to November. I think there is a clearer picture in April for what the needs are. Also, the November elections are complex for many people, including the elderly and the non-English speaking. Adding more names/issues to the November elections makes it confusing. Or is that the intention...... Don't worry about …   more ›

Board of Ed Could Move School Election to November

Option of moving elections on Monday night's Board of Education agenda.

Monday night's school board agenda includes a discussion and possible resolution on whether the Bernards school district should go along with a new statewide option to move school elections to November, and possibly eliminate a public vote on school budgets. "I would rather take my chances with the voters," School Board president Susan Carlsson said on Sunday evening, although she acknowledged her opinion might not be in the majority if the issue comes to a vote at Monday's meeting. She said she has several reasons for preferring to keep the school election in April, including that she doesn't want school business ever to become mixed up with municipal partisanship, even though she said she does not see that possibility with the current …

ADDED INFO: State Judge Upholds Shah Win in April's School Election

Decision averts request for special runoff election to settle whether Priti Shah or Beverly Cwerner won school board seat in April 27 election.

State Superior Court Judge Yolando Ciccone on Tuesday afternoon upheld the county's certification of Priti Shah as the winner of a seat on Board of Education, confirming a 1,193 to 1,191 vote count that negates a request for a special run-off election by former board member Bev Cwerner. Cwerner, through her attorney, Kevin Orr, had argued that the County Board of Elections had "erroneously" rejected two absentee votes on the basis that the signatures on those votes didn't match the signatures on those residents' voter registrations. With affidavits provided by the two voters that indeed they had filled out the ballots, Orr contended that the addition of two more votes to the official count would create a tie. In that case, he said in …

"I thank my supporters as I consider my options." This part frightens me because it seems to indicate that, as I predicted, Cwerner intends to file yet another suit. How many times must she lose before she accepts defeat, finally? No certified count has ever indicated Cwerner has won yet she persists. The best option for Cwerner, her supporters and the taxpayers is to run in next year's regularly…   more ›

Hearing on Possible School Election Runoff Set for 2 p.m. Tuesday

Attorneys for both Cwerner and Shah scheduled to go before state Superior Court in Somerville, Cwerner's attorney said.

An attorney for former school board member Bev Cwerner, who has mounted a court challenge to the disqualification of two votes and is seeking a special runoff election with new board member Priti Shah, said attorneys for both candidates will argue the issue at 2 p.m. in state Superior Court in Somerville. The case, which will be open to the public, had been scheduled for 9 a.m. but an attorney representing Shah, Linda Warshaw, had requested that the time be moved to 2 p.m., said Kevin Orr, Cwerner's attorney. Judge Yolanda Ciccone had agreed to the later time, Orr said in an email on Monday afternoon. Cwerner, an incumbent who had served on the board for three years, contends that the county erroneously disqualified two absentee votes that…
