The following Somerset County Senior Centers will be closed Thursday, March 7, due to anticipated inclement weather: Raritan, Quail Brook, Warrenbrook, Hillsborough, Manville, Montgomery and the Senior Wellness Center in Bernards, according to a late Wednesday afternoon announcement from the Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services. There will be no Meals on Wheels deliveries on Thursday, according to the announcement. Meals on Wheels clients are encouraged to use the frozen emergency meal delivered earlier in the season. Senior Wellness Center invites residents from throughout the Somerset Hills; Bernards area chamber holding Mardi Gras networking event.
The snow and even Monday's ice may have put something of a crimp in the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center's workshop to make Mardi Gras masks, but the party itself still is scheduled to go on Wednesday, said Kristen Grieco, manager of the center. Musical entertainment will be provided by jazz musician Gordon James, she said. A "Fat Tuesday" networking event also is planned by the Bernards Township Regional Chamber of Commerce for Tuesday evening at the Vine Restaurant on Route 202 in Basking Ridge. The Somerset County Office on Aging and Disability Services invites artists of all ages who live, work or go to school in Somerset County to submit photos or slides of fall-themed artwork for an exhibit at the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge. The deadline for submitting entries is Tuesday, Sept. 18. The exhibit will be on display from Oct. 3 to Dec. 14 at the center, located at 202 Mount Airy Road. Older residents from Basking Ridge and other nearby Somerset Hills towns this week had a chance to both celebrate and learn about the holiday of Divali, otherwise known as the Festival of Lights, at the Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge. Divali is an important and joyful holiday for followers for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. To enligten those at the center, Rachna Dave of the Office on Aging & Disability Services conducted the program, which included teaching the seniors how to create a Rangoli, a type of Indian folk art, using colored sand.
