American Express program helps promote local business.
While Black Friday has been a day for major box stores, the day after has become a day to celebrate locally owned businesses. These local merchants offered deals of their own on Small Business Saturday. Customers who registered ahead of time for Small Business Saturday and spend more than $25 at participating stores will receive a $25 credit to their AMEX bill. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that make their community thrive. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked. With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Bedminster. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities. Area shops roll out red carpet to welcome Black Friday shoppers while looking forward to Small Business Saturday.
Karen Thompson of Warren fled the Black Friday crush of the mall and the long line at the Vera Bradley store she was trying to enter when she remembered her morning email about sales at Apogee in downtown Basking Ridge. "There had to be 70 people in line," at the store at the mall, Thompson said. By contrast, in the small shop later on Friday morning, she was receiving personalized attention while browsing through what she said was the same selection. "It was a mob scene," Thompson said of her Friday morning trip to the mall. "Plus, it's good to support local businesses," she added. After leaving the fashion boutique, she said she was heading down South Finley Avenue to Down Cellar, a collectibles and crafts store also in Basking Ridge. …

Here's how to add some zip to your traditional Thanksgiving feast, courtesy of your local market or own kitchen.
Who says you can't start out your Thanksgiving Day feast with a little shrimp — or shrimp toast? Why not make a flavorful salad one of the stars of your table? And maybe serving Cognac pumpkin cheesecake in place of regular pumpkin pie would really wake up your guests! Or how about carving up some "evil turkey" this Turkey Day? If you're hosting Thanksgiving or bringing a side dish to this year's turkey feast, here are some ideas for spicing up and bringing some fresh ideas to the table this year, by way of your local markets — or your own initiative in the kitchen. Tuesday night showing of locally produced horror film was rescheduled from Halloween night.
Sometimes there's just not enough days to go around, but every week we'll give you an idea of something to do to relax, spend time with family and just take some time for yourself. This week, there's no reason to head to Hollywood when you can join Bernardsville native Ryan Weber at a special showing of the the movie he wrote, directed and edited, "Mary Horror." Weber said the movie will begin at about 9:30 p.m. at Clearview's Bernardsville Cinema 3, 5 Mine Brook Road, in downtown Bernardville. Even picture some of the Bernardsville Public Library's staff as zombies? Or the borough's mayor, Lee Honecker, in the role of a derelict? And the trailer to be shown of "Sheriff Tom vs. the Zombies," a follow to "Mary Horror," may show another …

Many restaurants and businesses open, with power or generators.
As of Tuesday, Election Day, there was little change in the number of customers without power as residents bundled up and found a variety of places to charge up, warm up and maybe seek an alternative place to sleep after a frigid overnight. Meanwhile, Bernards Township police also have placed ice outside the police headquarters which many residents had requested, and is available for the taking. Polls opened at 6 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m. as residents vote in local municipal, school, county, state and a U.S. presidential election. However, many polling places have been changed in Bernards Township due to the continuing power outages. The township website reported in its 6 p.m. update that 6,526 JCP&L customers remained without…
