Snow May Cause Hazardous Evening Commute

Winter weather advisory issued by National Weather Service Tuesday.

As snow continued to fall throughout the northern part of New Jersey Tuesday afternoon, the evening commute looked to be a possibly dangerous and messy trip for many. A winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service and is in effect until 7 p.m. for multiple counties, including Morris, Somerset, Warren and Sussex. “This winter weather advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties,” the alert from the NWS said. “Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility. Use extra care while driving.” The advisory said that the precipitation will be mainly snow, mixing with rain at some locations. Accumulations were predicted to reach between 2 to 4 inches. The snow was expected to continue through the …

Forecast: Colder Temperatures, But No Flooding

The weekend will be mostly cloudy with highs in the 50s.

Residents in New Jersey and New York can breathe a sigh of relief this weekend, as power restoration continues following Hurricane Sandy. The National Weather Service says some areas will experience colder temperatures, but no severe weather or flooding is expected. According to the forecast, scattered precipitation is possible in the interior northeast, eastern Great Lakes and central Appalachians. Rain and light snow could fall due to a cooler air mass, the weather service said. Any wintry precipitation should be less than two inches. Expect lows in the 30s, with temperatures climbing into the 40s and 50s throughout the weekend. In the event of any significant rainfall, you can watch flood gauges in the area.

Some Thrilled By First Storm of 2012

One teen had never seen snow before visiting her cousin this weekend in Somerset Hills.

By Saturday morning, many of the main roads were clear but most side roads were still untouched by plows in Somerset County. Many people were indoors as the snow changed to freezing rain and the winds added to the chill in the air—but not everyone. Those that were out in the first winter snowfall of the year were determined to get some sledding in—or, like Meghan Maffey, were shoveling out a driveway. It may not have been an impressive snowfall for most people, but for one 15-year-old, who was visiting a cousin in Bernardsville, the snow was a miracle. Nancy Villenueva, 15, of Honduras, said she had never seen snow before and was hoping it would snow when she arrived for her visit in lieu of having a traditional party to celebrate her 15th…

UPDATE: Remaining Outages Slowly Dwindling

Fewer than 4,200 outages in Morris and about 1,000 in Somerset.

Power outages continued to slowly drop throughout the area on Friday, closing in on full power in many towns as of early evening. The decline added to the considerable drop from Thursday evening to Friday morning, according to the outage map. As of 5 p.m. on Friday, there were no towns in Morris, Somerset or Sussex counties with more than 450 outages. Outages in Morris County had fallen to 4,136 as of 5 p.m., after dropping to 6,559 as of 7 a.m., which was more than half that reported early Thursday evening. Morristown's outages dropped to 440 as of 5 p.m. on Friday, according to JCP&L's online outage map. However, outages in Long Valley were crawling slightly up throughout the day. Somerset County's JCP&L outages fell to 914 at 5 p.m. on …

My 2 favorite favorite experiences with JCP&L this past week: 1) The ongoing opening telephone recording that went something like "Due to the effects of the recent storm, JCP&L will not be turning off power for non-payment". Darn, I wish that I hadn't paid my bill. 2) On my 5th day without power I made my daily phone call to see if the script had changed. The representative read me the ongoing …   more ›

UPDATE: Numbers of Power Outages Slowly Going Down

Heavy snow causes massive power outages in Basking Ridge, Bernardsville and other Somerset Hills towns. Residents advised the might need to wait 24 hours to get power back.

A pre-Halloween snowstorm had left about 8,800 Basking Ridge households without power as of Saturday evening resulted in work all over the Somerset Hills on Sunday to remove trees and repair power lines. As of about 6 p.m. on Sunday, more than a day after power first went out for many residents, the number of JCP&L customers reported to be without service in Basking Ridge had declined to 3,660. The number in Bernardsville, which earlier in the day had been up to more than 3,300 households, was at 2,330 as of just about 6 p.m., according to JCP&L's power outage map. At the same time, another 120 outages were reported by JCP&L within Liberty Corner Village, an increase from earlier in the day. In Bernardsville, almost 3,300 homes suffered a …

Can You Believe It's Snowing? Share Your Photos!

Get out there and build that snowman, and then let Patch readers see it!

So, the calendar says it’s Oct. 29. But it looks like Mother Nature wants to jump ahead a few months to mid-winter, judging by the looks of things outside. The snow is falling hard, and it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm warning for the area, with as much as 1 foot of snow expected in some areas. The snow is expected to fall through most of the day on Saturday and into the evening. This weekend's pre-Halloween storm is expected to pick up during the Saturday afternoon hours, producing as much as 1 to 2 inches per hour, according to the NWS. Reduced visibility will make traveling difficult, the NWS said. The weight of the snow could bring down tree limbs and …

UPDATED: Sick of the Heat Already? Remember January!

Township schools to return to regular schedule on Friday following early dismissal for two days. Other cool places to go.

Remember how pretty the first snows of the season looked last December? Well, we ended up getting more than our share! Okay, admit it, many of us are wondering whether a really hot summer will follow a wintry winter. Certainly, it was hot enough even in early June for a crowd to descend on the township's Pleasant Valley Pool when it opened at 4 p.m. on Thursday, in a continuation of early season hours.  Township schools let out early on Wednesday and Thursday, as school officials said that buildings are only partially air-conditioned, and grew too hot into the afternoon. Schools are scheduled to be open on regular hours on Friday, June 10, when the daily high temperature for this area is expected to revert to the mid-80s. In the meantime, …
