The Somerset Hills School district will reopen on Friday, with Bernards High School scheduled for a regular school day, and elementary and middle school students are set to attend split sessions at the Bedwell Elementary School, which has had power restored. According to the Somerset Hills School District website, the schools in the district are still without power, and many roads are not passable for school buses at this time. Bedminster Township School will be closed Thursday and Friday. The district websites reported the closures, saying they are due to weather conditions. There is no information yet on whether the districts will be closed Friday as well.

With Hurricane Sandy expected to arrive by Monday, Bedminster Township Public School has announced that the elementary school will be closed Monday and Tuesday of this week. Bernardsville Mayor Lee Honecker on Wednesday night assured the Somerset Hills Board of Education that the municipality has no intention of charging the school district to use the turf field at the borough property known as the polo grounds. Honecker said that the borough's recreation committee brought up the idea of renting out the field during a Borough Council meeting, but that that the municipality has no intention of charging rent to the school district. The Mayor and Council are on the right track. School user fees will simply transfer the cost and make the issue more controversial. In favor or not, we should all be aware that a turf field will not "pay for itself." Local residents will pay for it through some form of tax or user fees.   more ›
