Eleven departing seniors to be honored.
The Ridge High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse team will be hosting Glen Ridge for Senior Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Lee turf field behind the high school at 268 S. Finley Avenue. The team will be honoring its 11 graduating seniors and their parents prior to the game. This year's seniors include Mitchell Gray, Nick Schmidt, Alec Burckley, Chris Palladino, Jake Gunning, T.J. Jones, Ray Abbiatici, Eric Scott, Matt Zarabara, Brian Mangion and Chris Modugno. The team now is 9-3 for the season following Wednesday's 10-8 win over Bridgewater-Raritan, according to the team's website. As a fundraiser, Ridge Lacrosse, Inc. will have the concession stand opened and also will be selling Ridge Spirtwear, according to information from RLI. The Ridge …

This year's Ridge High School ice hockey team opened the season with a 3-2 win against longtime Skylands Conference rival Montgomery in a game last Saturday night, according to the team's website. Highlights of the game are on the ice hockey program's new vimeo website. The varsity team next plays Brick Memorial on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. and then perennial rival Bridgewater-Raritan at 8:15 p.m. on Friday night at the Bridgewater Sports Arena in Bridgewater. Friday night's game will be a team-sponsored charity event to aid Operation Santa Jersey Shore. Ridge High girls soccer coach says watching an Olympian who once wore the same soccer uniform is "amazing thing."
The U.S. Women's Soccer Team has knocked off the New Zealand team 2-0 with an assist from former Basking Ridge resident Tobin Heath, and now moves on to the semifinal on Monday against the winner of a Great Britain vs. Canada match. The U.S. team is undefeated, 4-0, following the Friday morning game against the New Zealand game, played in Newcastle, England. Midfielder Heath, a 2006 graduate of Ridge High School, assisted Sydney Leroux with a second-half goal that clinched the game for the U.S., according to a play-by-play on ussoccer.com. Pleasant Valley Pool Hosts This Year's Meet of Champions for Age 10 and under with participants from 11 teams.
The annual Meet of Champions swim competition was partially hosted at Pleasant Valley Park Pool last weekend, with swimmers 10 and under from eleven teams throughout Somerset, Morris and Warren counties swimming in Basking Ridge. The teams regularly put the Meet of Champions on their calendars as a highlight of the summer swim season. Along with the PVP swimmers, participants included the Bernardsville Swim Team, the Chester Riptides, the Bee Meadow Swim Team, the Burnham Park Barracudas, Cromwell Hills, The Glacier Hill Swim Team, the Hackettstown Hurricanes, Lake Hiawatha Swim Team, the Morris Plains Marlins and Stardust Recreation. The Ridge 8U baseball team won the Cal Ripken Tournament District 10 Championship this past week, led by pitching and defense, with a 9-2 victory over Branchburg in Hillsborough. Outstanding pitching throughout the district tournament play came from Gavin Kreitz, Michael Olivo, Jack Santonastaso, Joseph Latta and Jack Brenner to help lead the team to victory. Great defense and hitting were key, from Alex Kim, Brian Capato, Cameron Mays, Luke Mahala and Jake Fern. Daniel Taylor and Matthew Ricciardelli brought the big bats. The Pleasant Valley Pool swim team reaches the middle of the summer season with a splashing record of 3 wins and 1 loss.
With 137 swimmers, the Pleasant Valley Pool (PVP) swim team started off its season strong with a win against Burnham Park. Since then, the Piranhas have tackled opponents Hackettstown and Morris Plains. At the Hackettstown meet, PVP claimed gold in the first 16 events, beginning with the girls' 100-meter medley relay. Sarah Valente led the group, consisting of Kate Bradley, Coach Amanda Wachenfeld, and Elizabeth Buckley, to trump Hackettstown’s second place relay team by over two seconds. On the boy’s side, Coach Tyler Gibbons, Benjamin Aiken, Bradley Wachenfeld, and Jimmy Clark also touched in before their challengers by two seconds. Big second half allows Red Devils to defeat South Brunswick Vikings, 13-12, and advance in state tournament.
The tenth- seeded Ridge High School girls lacrosse team beat the second-seeded South Brunswick Vikings Thursday to advance to the third round in the NJSIAA State Tournament. The Ridge girls stole the show during the last 12 minutes of the game. 1st 2nd Final Ridge (14-7) 6 7 13 South Brunswick (17-2) 10 2 12 IN SHORT Ridge's Katie Solon scored six goals, including the game winner, as the Red Devils outpaced the Vikings 7-2 in the second half to eek out a hard-fought 13-12 win. The Ridge High School volleyball team ended its regular season with a loss to the highly ranked Hillsborough Raiders in straight sets Wednesday, dropping their record to 3-16. The game was played on the road. But then six straight points by the Raiders opened up a seven point gap to 21-14 to put the first game out of reach for the Red Devils. Pitcher keeps Red Devils' run alive.
J.B. Kole was captain of the highly successful varsity basketball team before coming into this year's baseball season. The 6-foot-4 Kole is an imposing figure on the mound and at the plate. In the county games leading up to the championship, Kole was 3-2 in eight starts. Most important, the three wins all came in the county tournament games. The team's run in the county tournament game have led to the final championship game against Hillsborough, held Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater. Tuesday's game had been cancelled due to inclement weather. The Ridge High School boys soccer team is setting the bar high before first game this Friday.
The Ridge High School Varsity boys soccer team plays its first season game this Friday, Sept. 10, with a goal of continuing past winning seasons. Two years ago, the Basking Ridge High School boys' soccer team won 16 of 20 games and advanced to the state sectional finals but lost to Elizabeth 2-1. Last year, the Red Devils finished with a record of 15-5, and advanced to the sectional semifinals, only to lose to Clifton 1-0 in overtime to end their season. This season, the team returns just three starters, including star sophomore goalie Kieran McCarthy and junior forward Jamison Lochhead, but a bevy of talented upper classmen return to fill the void.
