More Than Dozen Accidents on I-78 and 287 in Bernards Area

State police out cleaning up, but traffic is not blocked.

State police in Somerville said troopers were out on I-78 and Route 287 responding to about 14 to 15 accidentsin the Bernards Township area between about 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, as snow and an icy hail continued to fall on roads. A two-car accident at about 1 p.m. on I-78 westbound at milepost 28, just west of the intersection with Route 287, resulted in no major injuries, according to state police. He said a trooper was at the scene after 2 p.m., but traffic was flowing smoothly. A bypasser said that a car was on the median in that mishap. The Basking Ridge Fire Co. was seen heading to a crash on Route 287 northbound at milepost 25.5 at about 1:30 p.m. Another car had skidded off the road at mile marker 28.6 on Route 297 southbound shortly…

In my case, driving as slow as 15 mph helped me regain control without hitting the pavement, trees, etc., and the lack of oncoming traffic was a blessing. Studded tires aren't permitted here since they damage the road surface, like Linda said.   more ›

Update: Traffic Flowing After Earlier Accidents on I-78

Police said they are working on clearing accidents.

Traffic was observed to be flowing in both directions of Interstate 78 at the interchange with Route 287 as of about 10 a.m. after State Police said multi-vehicle accidents took place an hour or two earlier. Although there are no major injuries, State Police at Somerville barracks said at about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday they were working on clearing the accidents, which were reported before 9 a.m. Patch will continue to update this story.
