Bernards School Board has New President, VP

Former board vice-president Susan McGowan steps up to fill board presidency following Susan Carlsson's departure.

Although this year's vice-president of the Board of Education, Susan McGowan, automatically succeeded former Board President Susan Carlsson, who resigned effective May 21, the board was required to select a new vice-president on Monday night, and chose Board Member Audrey Cohen Sherwyn to fill the spot. Sherwyn, who is finishing her first three-year term on the board, is seeking re-election. Her appointment as board vice president was unopposed, although Board Member Michael Byrne abstained on voting on the proposal to name Sherwyn to the position. The vote for a new vice-president was made after the full board publicly interviewed two applicants to fill the vacancy left on the board after Carlsson resigned because she said she had …

Susan Carlsson Presides Over Last BOE Meeting

Bernards Board of Education president leaving board, leaving town.

After six years on the Bernards Board of Education, Susan Carlsson on Monday presided over her last meeting, speaking and voting her mind as was usual, and packing up her name plate to take with her when she leaves the township. Carlsson, who announced her resignation at the end of March, said she would do her final packing up on Tuesday morning and head down to her home at the Shore she shares with her husband. She added that her daughter has just graduated from Cornell University and she has a son at Rutgers University — having made the point earlier that she no longer has children in the Bernards school system. But before she exited the stage, Carlsson was lauded by her fellow board members for her many volunteer hours and by Schools …

Update: Two candidates, Louis D'Autorio and Beverly Cwerner, scheduled to be interviewed by the Board of Education on June 11.

Two applicants have filed a package with the Bernards Board of Education seeking to be appointed to fill a vacant position left by the resignation of board member Susan Carlsson, whose term will expire at the end of 2012. The two candidates are Louis J. D'Autorio, of 490 South Maple Ave., and Bev Darvin Cwerner, 111 Elmwood Court, according to schools Superintendent Valerie Goger. Board members are scheduled to interview the candidates at the June 11 board meeting, according to the board's business office. BOE Seeks New Member to Finish Carlsson's Term

Applications now being accepted to fill spot from June through next January.

The Board of Education has begun accepting applications to fill a vacant seat that will be available from June 11 until the board's reorganization meeting in January. The new board member would fulfill the unexpired term of Board President Susan Carlsson, and would have the option of seeking election in November to remain on the board for a new three-year term to begin next January. Carlsson announced her resignation at the March 26 school board meeting. At that time, she said her resignation takes effect May 21, around the time she had expected to leave the board, anyway. By that time, she said, she will have served six years on the board, including two years as board president. Carlsson's second term would have expired in April. However…

MORE: School Bd. President Susan Carlsson Resigns

Carlsson said she never intended to serve through all of 2012.

School Board President Susan Carlsson announced at the end of Monday's meeting that she will resign effective May 21, around the time she had expected to leave the board, anyway. However, due to the school board's earlier decision to move school elections to November, Carlsson's three year term, which previously would have expired this April, had been extended through the rest of 2012. On Tuesday, Carlsson said she is wrapping up up her sixth year on the board. But Carlsson said Monday she is resigning anyway, and the board will need to advertise to seek a Board of Education member who can serve her term through the end of this year. That person then would have the option of seeking reelection on the November ballot. The deadline is June 5…

Let's hope the temporary member is not that Bev Cwerner again. She wasted tax payer money because she was a sore loser. I'm sure she'll run -- she's been complaining since the day she was voted OUT! I hope she moves on and doesn't disgrace herself and her family again.   more ›
