Summer's Bounty, Activities Gearing Up, School Year Winding Down This Week.

Here are some of the things coming up in Basking Ridge this week.

With summer kicking off officially this week, area farm stands are open — and we'll take a look this week at some of the places in Basking Ridge and nearby you can go to enjoy fresh produce and farm products. Bernards Township hosts a wide variety of farm and/or produce stands, from the English Farm in Liberty Corner — dating back to pre-Revolutionary War Days — to more recent arrivals. Patch will be taking a look this week at what's out there. The Bernards Township Parks and Receation also has laid out its calendar for summer concerts, theater in the park and activities for local kids. Meanwhile, memberships still are available for the Pleasant Valley Pool and the Coakley-Russo Memorial Golf Course, also located off Valley Road in …

Bernards School Board, Township Committee Meeting This Week

Group that wants advanced instruction for advanced elementary school students plans to approach school board.

A newly formed group of parents with the stated goal of encouraging a program that would allow advanced students in kindergarten through grades 5 to receive additional instruction is expecting to approach the Bernards Board of Education at its Monday meeting, one parent said. Parent Adam Hecht said the parents are asking that anyone interested join their discussion at 6 p.m. on Monday in room 111 at the William Annin Middle School. The board is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. in the WAMS auditorium. Hecht said that the parents have been talking about multiple options for approaching what would be in essence a return of a gifted and talented program. Meanwhile, the Bernards Township Committee is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, with the …

First Duck Race and Arts Festival, Mosque Hearing Continues This Week

Also, primary election scheduled for June 4.

The township-owned Farmstead Arts center, which opened in 2010 at the Kennedy Martin Stelle Farmstead off King George Road, has been making steady efforts to draw more area residents to its events, exhibitions and programs — and this Saturday could be the biggest draw yet. The Farmstead, centered in an historic farmhouse along the Passaic River, has scheduled its first Farmstead Duck Races and Art Festival for noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, at 450 King George Road. The family-oriented day will include arts and crafts, a silent auction of more than 40 pieces of artworks, food and music. Then, at 3 p.m., more than 1,000 rubber ducks will be launched into the Passaic River, competing for a $500 grand prize. Ducks now are for sale for $5 each, or…

Scottish Festival and Highland Games at Bonnie Brae, 25th Annual Pleasant Valley Twilight Challenge.

This next week includes the return of two very popular annual events in Basking Ridge — Bonnie Brae's Scottish Festival and Highland Games, to be held Saturday at the green grounds at the residential school in Liberty Corner, and the Pleasant Valley Twilight Challenge on Sunday. This will be the 25th year that 5K run, one-mile walk and the free kids Lollipop Loop will be held to promote prevention of underage alcohol consumption. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. This year, for the 25th anniversary, participants or spectators are invited to show up in '80s costumes. Prizes will be awarded. Memorial Day Parade, Pool Opens, School Signups in Week Ahead

Time to get paperwork in place for school bus signups or running for school board in Bernards Township Schools.

The annual Memorial Day Parade in Bernards Township — held on a rotating annual basis in either Basking Ridge Center or Liberty Village — is always a brief but heartfelt occasion. This year, the Bernards Township Memorial Day Parade again will be hosted in Liberty Corner, with the assembled paraders set to step off from the Liberty Corner Firehouse at 95 Church St. at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27. Flag-wavers and those who are happy to welcome the paraders (and to celebrate the official start of summer) typically line the parade route, which proceeds to the flag pole and memorial at the triangle in downtown Liberty Corner. Each year, the mayor and others make speeches reminding those who are heading off to barbecues or — assuming a massive …

Funny. I thought Memorial Day was a day of reflection and remembrance for those that were lost in our nation's conflict. I didn't think it was a day to "celebrate the official start of summer." For the record, Summer officially starts on June 13th this year. Not on May 27th.   more ›

Ridge Students Shine on Field and at Prom, ID Theft Hits Home in Top News

Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams took the title of Somerset County champions this year.

Yes, it can happen to someone you know. Bernards Township residents were among the more than 70 people who made reports to 30 police departments within the last year or so that they were the victims of identity theft, prompting a statewide investigation that led to the arrest of 11 people earlier this month, authorities said. The alleged credit card scheme hit home for the residents starting in December 2012, Bernards Township police said. It was a great evening to be part of the party for the Ridge High School senior prom — and even a great opportunity to ooh and aah over some of the evening's fashions. There was a great deal of celebrating when the Ridge boys lacrosse team trounced the almost-unbeatable Somerville team 8-4 on May 16 to …

Charter Day, 5K for Kindness, Meetings This Week

The biggest community celebration of the year is this Saturday, municipal budget due for final passage on Tuesday.

Charter Day, which is celebrated this year as the anniversary of the founding of the township of Bernardston by order of British King George II in 1760, is coming up this Saturday. Along with the historic aspects of the date, there's lots of fun each May during the full-day event, with local bands, food, rides and other attractions and more planned for the big day, which will run from about 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. or so. Also this week, those who want to participate in an official 5K run for a good cause (or at least take a mile walk) can join Thursday evening's 5K for Kindness and Walk, a fundraiser for the charitable activities of the St. James Men of Charity, based at St. James Church in Basking Ridge. And speaking of St. James, students at …

Quarry Recommendation, Summer Sign Ups Coming Up This Week

Pleasant Valley pool now offering memberships to residents and non-residents.

Two months after eligible members of the Planning Board voted to recommend that the Bernards Township Committee approve part of the Millington Quarry's plans to rehabilitate the facility after closure, that decision is due to come up for a final resolution on Tuesday night. The recommendation, approved at the Planning Board's March 5 meeting, was to be put in final form by the board's attorney. That resolution is on the agenda for the Planning Board meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Planning Board hearings began in November 2011 for the quarry's closure plan for the active mining area within about 179 acres off Stonehouse Road. Almost a year and a half of expert testimony, questions and many exhibits led to the board's 5-0 vote …

Also, Ridge field hockey spring clinic for girls, VNA rummage sale coming up.

Since moving the election for Bernards Township Board of Education candidates to November, April marks the beginning, not the end, of the election process for school board members — and this year, there will be three seats opening.
