The Ridge Traffic Task Force, appointed last fall, is expected to put a report online on Monday outlining its review of options for ways to alleviate morning traffic backups at Ridge High School. The task force is expected to hold another public presentation at 7 p.m. the following Monday, March 25, in the courtroom at the Town Hall at 1 Collyer Lane, Bernards Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian said in an email to parents last Friday. Budget and School Calendar Changes On Agenda This Week

Also, the Bernards Planning Board's final review of Quarry Rehabilitation Plan begins this Tuesday.

The Bernards Township school board has two big topics on the agenda for Monday night: introducing the 2013-14 school budget, now that the school district has learned it will receive the same state aid as last year, and also the final adoption of a revised school calendar next year. The board is scheduled to discuss the introduced budget at a meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Ridge High School Performing Arts Center, 268 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge. State aid figures for next year were released on Thursday by the N.J. Department of Education, when the school district learned that Bernards schools will receive $3,057,466 in aid, equal to that the 2012-13 school year. A public hearing and final vote on whether to adopt the budget is …

Three Local Candidates Already in Race, Twp. Committee Meets This Week

Also, Monday is the deadline for the Ridge Alumni Memorial Scholarship, based on character, for graduating senior.

Bernards Township Democrats already have chosen a candidate to represent that party in the upcoming primary election — David Ferdinand, who also ran last year and heads up the Bernards Democratic Committee. Township Republicans already have two candidates who have declared their campaigns for the one seat that will be up for election this November — Carol Bianchi and Kevin Orr, both members of the Bernards Township Planning Board. John Bayeux, chairman of the Bernards Township Republican Committee, said that the local Republican organization plans to issue a call-out this week for any other candidates who wish to seek the Republican committee's endorsement for this June's primary election. One person who won't be on the ballot this year is…

Far Hills Road Dispute, Quarry Hearing Near End at Top of Local News

Was your kid dragging his or her feet about going to school on days that were supposed to be days off before Sandy blew into town?

After 15 months of hearings, each many hours long, it's time for the Bernards Planning Board to decide whether the Millington Quarry's rehabilitation plan for its post-quarrying life should be endorsed for approval by the Bernards Township Committee. But three longtime members — two of whom sat through hearings in 2011 and 2012 — are gone as of 2013, and their replacements reportedly won't be voting. As of Feb. 27, the Bernards Township Committee has informed Far Hills that it must pay 50 percent of all maintenance and repaving costs for Douglas Road and part of Mine Brook Road — both split exactly down the middle by the border betweeen the two towns. Will Bernards end up maintaining only its side of the street? Mayor of Far Hills wants to…

Schools, Twp., Closed on Presidents' Day, but School Vacation Shorter

Bernards Township students will be back in school on Thursday and Friday to make up days lost to Hurricane Sandy.

The Bernards Township Schools and Bernards municipal building and Bernards Township Library all will be closed on Monday for Presidents Day. But while the day was intended to kick off the traditional weeklong February vacation for Bernards Township students, the holiday won't be as long as usual this year — thanks to Hurricane Sandy. The last two days of this week, Thursday and Friday, were intended to be part of the vacation. But the holiday time was lopped off — with students expected to report to school those days — as part of the school board's make-up time for eight days lost to Sandy last October and November. The extra days previous scheduled for time off that have been returned to this year's school calendar include the Martin …

School Calendar, Open Space Tax Discussions Coming Up This Week

After sending out a survey to parents, staff and some students, the Board of Education is set to review next year's school calendar.

A revised school calendar for 2013-14 and the following year is set to be discussed at Monday's Board of Education meeting. After sending a survey about future school calendars out to parents, staff and some students that was due on Feb. 5, Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian said in an email to parents that a draft calendar for the 2013-14 school year will be presented at the meeting at 7 p.m. at the William Annin Middle School. The survey results also will be presented at Monday's meeting, the superintendent said. The calendars for the next two years already have been set by the board, but school officials are revisiting the scheduled calendars for several reasons. School officials said that some parents have said that the school year …

Mosque Hearing Back, School Survey Due This Week

Also, kindergarten registration on Thursday, and 'Jeans for Teens' collection continues.

This Tuesday is the next in a series of hearings on the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's proposal before the Bernards Township Planning Board to continue its series of hearings on a plan to build a 4,200-square-foot mosque at 124 Church Street in Liberty Corner Village. At the last meeting, in early January, township professionals asked that the number of parking spaces at the house of worship be increased to 110 from a proposal for 50 because they said that mosque worshippers typically arrive one or two in a car for Friday services, rather than about four for church services. The applicant's attorney objected to a requirement he said is not mandated by the township's zoning ordinances. Bernardsville architect Dan Lincoln also presented …

School Calendar Reconsideration, Quarry Hearing Coming This Week

Also, Ridge High School's new quarterly assessment tests begin this Thursday.

Monday's Board of Education is likely to include discussion on the reconsideration of the already-approved school calendar for the 2013-14 school year and the following year, as school officials look at ways to avoid such a late final day in June and answer requests for a holiday on the Indian festival of Diwali. The school board meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, and will be held at the William Annin Middle School. At a previous meeting, the school board introduced a policy change saying that a school calendar for the upcoming year can be revised until March 1, and that policy may be approved this week. Parents to receive survey regarding school calendar Also this week, Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian said in an …

Library, Town Offices Closed, Schools Open for MLK Day

Hurricane Sandy meant that school has been rescheduled in Bernards Township schools.

Monday's federal holiday to recognize slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will close municipal offices and the Bernards Township Library — but not local schools. All Bernards Township municipal offices will be closed for the holiday, according to the Bernards Township website. The library at 32 S. Maple Ave., after being closed for the holiday, will reopen on Tuesday for scheduled events for the rest of the week. Information is online. Bernards Township schools, however, will be in session after the holiday was returned to the school calendar when the Board of Education combed the second half of this year's school calendar to make up days lost for time off for Hurricane Sandy and the resulting power outages. However, …
