Guilty Plea from driver in Bernards crash that killed Bridgewater man, nudist club plans open house.
A Basking Ridge man and his 4-year-old granddaughter from Long Hill Township were pulled from the swiftly moving current of the Passaic River last Sunday afternoon. The rescue prompted kudos for the police officer and the volunteer first assistant fire chief who safely brought the man and child back to shore. A parents group has called for the need for more academic enrichment programs in elementary grades, and the Board of Education's curriculum committee's promised to review the issue with the school administration. At Monday’s school board meeting — and beforehand — members of the recently formed Bernards Township Parents for Advanced Curriculum told board members that the district is not fulfilling its obligation to provide an advanced…

Ridge Lacrosse's Eric Scott named player of the year.
Bear sightings have become relatively common in Bernards Township, but on Wednesday all of Ridge High School stayed put for about a half-hour around lunchtime to prevent students and a roaming beer from rubbing shoulders. Had the bear sniffed cafeteria food? Longtime Bernards School Board Member Michael Byrne and Elaine Kusel, finishing up her first three-year term, filed by Tuesday's deadline to seek re-election, along with two newcomers, Christopher Viereck and John Groot. There are three seats open on the school board this year — Board Member Bill Koch did not file to seek re-election. As a result of a petition filed on the day of the primary election, last Tuesday, Republican Carol Bianchi and Democrat David Ferdinand now will share …

Ridge boys lacrosse continues hot streak.
The National Criterium Calendar (NCC) BaseCamp International race, held on Thursday night in downtown Basking Ridge, attracted 99 accomplished cyclists and local residents who wanted to enjoy the bike racing and an evening out. The race, presented by Verizon Wireless, was held for the seventh year. Liberty Cycle of Basking Ridge launched the race and is promoter of the event. Although it may seem obvious, public officials said some township residents have planted or installed drains or other structures on public property. The new law also would govern easements on private property. The remains of a 'sickly' raccoon in a storm drain shot by a Bernardsville Police officer on May 17 have tested positive for rabies, according to the Bernards …

'Fed up' resident said he will run for Township Committee, prom pictures remain on most popular list.
Their peers selected a Teacher of the Year at each of Bernards Township's six schools — and there were plenty of teachers in the audience when the names were announced at this week's Board of Education meeting. The team wasn't expected to win this year, their coach said, but the foursome of two seniors and two sophomores did just that — meaning the Ridge girls varsity golf program has won the state championship three of the five years that the program has been in existence. Bill Connors, a South Finley Avenue resident, said members of the Township Committee refuse to acknowledge that routing some school traffic through the back of the municipal complex is a preferred solution to Ridge High School's traffic backups, at least for the time …

Somerset County high school championships included giant track meet on Tuesday.
Four of six Basking Ridge teens in a car driven by a 17-year-old resident were taken to the hospital shortly after midnight on Saturday, on May 4, and one remained at Morristown Medical Center with a serious head injury. Even later in the week, the crash still was being investigated, although police said no additional summonses had been issued to the driver. The hospital said the most severely injured teen was no longer there as of Friday. A tractor trailer carrying bee hives from Florida to Maine lost some of its cargo Monday morning, Bernards Township police said. A Long Hill woman who had been missing since Wednesday was found safe last Saturday afternoon. Ridge High School track, jumping and throwing athletes joined at least 650 …

The three school board candidates whose terms are up for re-election decline to say whether they'll run again.
A massive search was underway Thursday for a woman who never made it home from her parents' Basking Ridge home a night earlier. But the good news went out Saturday evening that Carrie Ruffner had been found safe not far from her home. Four Basking Ridge teens, ages 16 and 17, were hospitalized following a one-vehicle crash on Valley Road in early May left one of the passengers with a serious head injury, said Bernards Township police. Police said a 17-year-old Basking Ridge resident was driving a 2005 Honda with five passengers, all from Basking Ridge, and lost control of the car while heading north on Valley Road in the area of Heritage Court. A mother who said her 6-year-old daughter was subjected to an unprovoked and "vicious" attack by…

Ridge girls celebrate softball shutout.
Ridge High School is this year ranked no. 14 in New Jersey, and no. 200 in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report's annual rating of top high schools. Bernards Township Police said they received different versions a crash on Mount Airy Road where a motorcycle was hit while trying to pass a Lexus on the car's lefthand side. The Bernards Township Planning Board, which has been considering the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge's application to build the 4,200-square-foot house of worship since last summer, had asked the ISBR's traffic expert, Henry Ney, to return with more information at the most recent hearing, on Thursday night. But now Ney has been asked to come up with additional specifics before the next scheduled meeting on …

A Basking Ridge ambulance and Bernards Township police car collide on way to answering multiple calls.
The assistant manager at the Sneaker Factory and a Bernardsville man were among those who had completed the Boston Marathon prior to the tragic explosion that created such havoc, killed three and injured more. Two callouts to emergency responders during a power outage in the northern end of Basking Ridge on a Saturday morning in mid-April resulted in multiple police cars, fire and rescue squad vehicles heading to the same area. Confusion ensued when an ambulance trying to make a left hand turn on North Maple Avenue collided with a passing police car. No serious injuries were reported, and another police officer and the Basking Ridge Fire Co. handled the calls for the man stuck in an elevator at Dolce and an electrical fire in a home. The …

Chris Christie Drops by RVCC, Nudist Camp in magazine, pancake breakfast attracts hundreds.
The Bernards Township Committee and Board of Education may be in relative agreement on a solution with the goal of improving traffic flow and safety on the Ridge High School campus. However, the choice of "option 9," constructing a new two-way driveway by the Bernards Township health department to divert bus and student traffic away from parents dropping off students, requires approval from Somerset County. It also raised objections from nearby neighbors, and some who are sceptical it will meet its goal. The Bernards Township Committee on Tuesday adopted a $35.14 million municipal budget for 2013 that raises municipal taxes by 1.99 percent, under the 2 percent state cap on budget spending, according to township figures. The budget would …

Also, former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum is still in town and seeking applicants for Tannenbaum family scholarship at YMCA.
The local Republican and Democrats honed in on their candidates to support for this June's primary election ballot, leaving the contest until the November election. The Somerset Hills YMCA in Basking Ridge, where former N.Y. Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum remains on the Board of Directors, announced on Wednesday that the deadline has been extended for YMCA members who wish to apply for this year's Tannenbaum family scholarship.
