Truck Fire May Have Destroyed Basking Ridge Mail

UPDATE: No questions yet on possibly lost mail for multiple zip codes, as state agency tries to help those whose mail never made it to government offices.

The Christie administration is directing state agencies to help people in New Jersey affected by a mail truck fire Sept. 11 on the New Jersey Turnpike that caught fire after a collision that killed the driver. The state Department of Treasury then announced it is working to assist residents in towns who had mail that may have been sent to government offices between Sept. 7 and Sept. 10. The truck was carrying one day’s worth of mail to a variety of locations in central New Jersey, including letters and packages bound for some state government offices in Trenton and the surrounding area, the state said. Affected zip codes begin with 079, 078, 070 to 076, 088 and 089. As of about 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, postal employees at The Hills posted …

U.S. Postal Service Shelves Plans to Close The Hills Post Office

Postal official said surveys were never sent out because possibility of closing the Allen Road post office has been abandoned for now.

The U.S. Postal Service has dropped its study to consider closing the Village Station Post Office at 566 Allen Road in Basking Ridge, which will remain open for the forseeable future, a spokesman for the postal service said on Monday. "The study has been stopped and we have no current plans to re-open the study," George B. Flood, corporate communications manager for the USPS Northeast area, said in an email. The USPS announced in late July that it would pare down its 32,000 offices nationwide, and the Village Center Station, serving thousands of residents in The Hills, was among the sites being considered for possible closure. Later in August, Flood said the study on whether the post office at the top of Allen Road would be among almost 4,…

Residents and business cutomers in The Hills will receive mailed surveys asking for input, postal official says Monday.

UPDATED: A U.S. Postal Service study on whether the Village Center Station post office would be among almost 4,000 postal centers that may be closed will take several months to complete, with no definite time frame available at this point, a USPS spokesman said on Monday. When the study is begun, surveys will be mailed to every residential, business and post office box customer served by the Village Center Station, said George B. Flood, corporate communication manager for the USPS northeast area, based in Newark. Input will be collected from the public in other ways, he added. For now, it's business as usual at the Village Center Station post office at 566 Allen Road in The Hills development. In fact, some of those visiting the postal …

Since 2001, first class mail volume has drop from 104 billion to 78 billion, back to the level it was in 1987. It dropped from 92 billion to 78 billion in the last 2 years alone and doesn't appear to be leveling out! The US postal service lost $8.5 billion last year. They need to consolidate their business or there won't be a postal service. Volume link: http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:…   more ›

Village Center Post Office Considered for Closing

No decision made, but studies to be made of 3,700 offices nationwide.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday it will study whether to close 3,700 retail offices—including the Village Center Station at 566 Allen Road in The Hills—among its nearly 32,000 post offices nationwide. No decision has been made on closing any of the post offices to be considered. But Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in Tuesday's news release, "the Postal Service of the future will be smaller, leaner and more competitive and it will continue to drive commerce, serve communities and deliver value." Bernards Township now has three post offices. The Village Center Station and the Basking Ridge post office at 21 Brownlee in downtown Basking Ridge both have a zip code of 07920. Another post office is located at 8 Church St. in …
