Verizon Unions Due to Vote on Contract Friday

New deal to replace agreement that expired August 2011 would take effect if unions vote to ratify.

The tentative contract agreement reached last month by negotiators for Verizon Communications and wireline and communications unions for Verizon employees is due for a final vote by union employees this Friday. "All the unions involved with bargaining must complete voting by this Friday," said Bill Huber, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 827 in New Jersey. Huber said he plans to notify the company of the New Jersey IBEW local's results by early afternoon. "If the membership ratifies, then we have a new agreement." In that case, he said, a 2.25 percent raise for the membership, about 6,000 in New Jersey, goes into effect on Sunday. Raises for the new contract, which would replace the agreement that …

Verizon Announces Tentative Union Contract Settlement

But NJ IBEW union local website cautions there still is not a signed agreement in place.

Verizon Communications Inc. announced on Wednesday that a tentative agreement has been reached between the company and the Communications Workers of America (CWA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) on new, three-year contracts for about 43,000 East wireline associates. The agreement is in the process of being signed, and must be presented to union members for a ratification vote, Verizon said. Meanwhile, a communication on the New Jersey IBEW Local 827 website cautioned that union local has "problems" with signing an agreement until the resolution the firing of a former employee accused of strike-related misconduct last year. But the website also said ratification meetings will be scheduled in early October. The…

Verizon, Union Talks Continue After 'Intensive' Five Weeks

Negotiations moved to undisclosed location in New York.

Five weeks of "intensive negotiations" between Verizon and two unions representing thousands of employees in the Northeast, including the IBEW and CWA in New Jersey, have led to progress on a number of issues, a federal mediator said in a statement on Friday. However, "a number of issues remain to resolved," according to the statement by Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen. The statement said the both parties, in discussions regarding a new contract to replace one that expired in August 2011, will continue to meet to resolve those final issues. The meeting place is said to be an undisclosed location in New York. Cohen's statement was passed along by William Huber, president and business manager of IBEW Local…

Hi Mike Smith, I really hate to remove any comments but our terms of service govern language. I thank you for your point of view that you feel this is, "A way for both paries to stall. Verizon is stalling to see who wins the presidental election in November. If Obama wins they will not have to worry about healthcare, and if Romney wins they can count on higher tax breaks and more money for...…   more ›

Verizon, Unions Extend Federal Mediation for Contract

'Significant key issues remain on the table,' union president said.

A federal mediator has extended contract talks between unions and Verizon, where union demonstrators have repeatedly demonstrated by the Basking Ridge headquarters, beyond Wednesday's deadline by with some reported progress. "We are here this week. [in Washington, D.C.] We are still talking," said William Huber, president and business manager of IBEW Local 827, which represents about 5,600 wireline workers in New Jersey. The latest document extends the negotiating process for another week until 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, Huber said. The unions and Verizon are in talks regarding a contract that expired on Aug. 6, 2011, leading to a strike last August by about 45,000 wireline and communications center workers in multiple states. The unions …

Maybe the real story here is the untold one behind the little white lie. Verizon used it's non-bargaining network technicians from the west coast, that were aquired with the purchase of the much superior MCI, to run the east coast network during the strike. This was not a volunteer basis. Employee's were told they were going (pretty much under the threat of losing their job), no choice. Then the …   more ›

VIDEO: Verizon Protesters Tour Morristown

More than 100 union workers were out in the sun and around the Green on Friday.

Tturned out that Wednesday's demonstration outside Bank of America wasn't going to be the only protest Morristown saw last week. Late Friday afternoon, over 100 people, clad mostly in red, walked Morristown's streets in protest against layoffs by Verizon, whose New Jersey offices are in Basking Ridge, South Brunswick and Brick Township. Still, if you want to make a statement, you can do worse than make it amidst the sun-dappled trees of the Green in Morristown. Verizon wireline and back office workers, represented by two unions in New Jersey and elsewhere in Eastern states, have been working under the terms of a previous contract since that pact expired last August. The union members have demonstrated at the Basking Ridge headquarters and …

UPDATE: Verizon Union Rally By CEO's House Sunday

With contract talks stalled, Union leader says that Verizon demonstrators plan to gather outside home of Verizon president and chief executive officer Lowell McAdam.

A few hundred Verizon union members were rallying on Sunday morning outside the home of Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam and were planning to stay until at least noon, said said Bill Huber, president and business manager of New Jersey Local 827 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. The rally had been planned earlier with a "Worksite Tax Theme," with the union disputing the company's figures showing it had paid billions in taxes at all levels, Huber said. Both sides also report no progress over an unsettled contract. The union members were planning be at the location for a few hours, and local police already had been contacted, Huber said on Friday. The location of McAdam's house earlier had been identified as Bedminster, but …

I hate both sides. Companies like verizon who have CEO's like Lowell McAdam who once stated at a fancy, private dinner "the cwa is all a bunch of niggers. you go into the verizon wireless stores and it is all good looking, outgoing, young and hip people working there. the wireline, its all a bunch of niggers". On the other hand, the CWA, the union is also just a racist, out of touch, thug …   more ›
