Schools: No Beef Trimmings (Pink Slime) in Cafeterias

ARAMARK says no boneless lean beef trimmings in meat purchased for Bernards schools.

The meat served in cafeterias in Bernards Township schools does not include boneless lean beef trimmings, so-called "pink slime," according to an associate district manager with ARAMARK Education. ARAMARK handles food service for all township schools. The issue was raised by parents at a meeting Wednesday morning sponsored by the William Annin Middle School Parent-Teacher Organization. The WAMS PTO had invited ARAMARK representatives to the meeting to discuss making healthy choices in school cafeterias. Parents asked questions about many subjects, including whether students could sample some of the healthy items being added to school menus. Later, Debra H. Former School Contractor Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy, Theft, Money Laundering

Case stems back to embezzlement of school funds since returned to district, officials say.

The Somerset County Prosecutor's office announced Friday that Robert E. Titus Jr., one of four defendants accused of defrauding $2.1 million from the Bernards Township School system while performing projects through Aramark Corp. between 2003-08, entered pleas of guilty to related charges in State Superior Court. Titus, 54, of Jackson, pleaded guilty on Friday to charges of first and third degree money laundering, second degree theft by deception and second degree conspiracy to commit those offenses before the Superior Court Judge Julie M. Marino, according to a news release from County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano.
