Tuesday Deadline to Register to Vote in June Primary Election

Township Committee candidates to be listed on primary ballot, but no contest until November's general election.

This Tuesday, May 14, is the last day to register to vote in the Primary Election to select party candidates, to be held June 4. The Somerset County offices on Grove Street will have extended hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday for anyone still looking to register. There will be no local race in this year’s primary, with one Democrat and one Republican each seeking the one-three year seat on the Bernards Township Committee that is being vacated by Republican Scott Spitzer, who is not seeking re-election. For the Democrats, candidate David Ferdinand, who ran last year but was not elected to the all-Republican Township Committee, again is seeking his party's nomination to be listed on the ballot this November. Christie: Teachers Not the Problem... 'Unions Are'

Governor discusses middle-class reform agenda in town hall meeting at Raritan Valley Community College.

Gov. Chris Christie said there is an "extraordinary divide" between teachers and the unions that represent them during a stop Thursday at Raritan Valley Community College. The governor, on the campaign trail seeking re-election, conducted his 105th town hall meeting to discuss what his staff billed as his middle-class reform agenda, including pension and benefits reform, private sector job growth and his take on teachers' unions. Alexa Offenhauer, a part-time English professor at RVCC, said she had entered teaching with the understanding that her pay would be lower, but that the trade-off would be job security and good benefits. Offenhauer asked the governor when rhetoric had changed to make "teachers part of the problem." 'Unions are the …

Republicans Kick Off Bernards, County and State Campaigns

Republicans State Sen. Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr., who represents Bernards, and Somerset County sheriff also attend GOP campaign kickoff.

As may be becoming a tradition in Basking Ridge, Bernards Township Republicans kicked off the season's campaign at the downtown gazebo this past weekend, introducing the party's candidate for Township Council this year, Carol Bianchi, as well as county and state representatives for the GOP. John Bayeux, chairman of the Bernards Township Republican Municipal Committee, called upon members of the party to elect or re-elect party members at all levels of government, from Gov. Chris Christie, to county and other state representatives and also Bianchi. Following a screening held on March 18, Bianchi was endorsed for the local Republican party's choice in the June primary by the township Republican Municipal Committee. Bianchi currently is the …

GOP Planning Board Members Eye Twp. Committee Seat

Kevin Orr and Carol Bianchi seek endorsement of Republican Municipal Committee.

It's been barely a week since Republican Township Committeeman Scott Spitzer announced he has decided against seeking re-election to his seat on the governing body, and since then two members of the Bernards Township Planning each have said they would like to fill that spot next year. Carol Bianchi, this year's chair of the Planning Board, and Kevin Orr, chairman of the township Board of Adjustment and a member of the township Planning Board, both said they are seeking the Republican municipal committee's endorsement for this year's official Republican candidate for Township Committee. Although Republican candidates for Township Committee have faced competition from Democratic challengers in recent years, the Republicans have managed to …
