Elementary and middle school to share Bedwell since Bernardsville Middle School without power.
The Somerset Hills School district will reopen on Friday, with Bernards High School scheduled for a regular school day, and elementary and middle school students are set to attend split sessions at the Bedwell Elementary School, which has had power restored. A regular lunch will be served at the high school, said the school website, which also has detailed transportation information. The website stressed that any student without a safe route to school is excused, and attendance modifications will be made for those not able to attend school on Friday. The Hills community has power restored, overall outages decline to less than 5,000.
Most of The Hills community has power restored and townwide outages have dropped to 4,376, according to the Wednesday night update on the Bernards Township website. But powerless areas persisted in the northern part of the township, although the center of Basking Ridge had power back, and many businesses were open as usual on Tuesday. Much of The Hills had power restored, but some townhouse neighborhoods remained in the dark and cold on Tuesday overnight. Some of the Hills Highland Village Center businesses have been open and running on generators, while the Riverwalk and 100 Marketplace Malls have been fully operational all week. Students could attend school Nov. 8-9, days of canceled NJEA convention.
Bernards Schools Superintendent Nick Markarian said shortly after 6 p.m. Monday that only two of the district's schools, William Annin Middle School and the Liberty Corner Elementary School, had power at that time. School has been canceled for Tuesday. Markarian said that he also is concerned about Wednesday's predicted storm. School Board President Susan McGowan said that since the NJEA teachers convention was canceled we will have school November 8 and November if schools are operational by then. All staff and students should plan to report to school on those dates if the schools are open by that time, she said. Riverwalk YMCA again opens early Monday, North Finley and Maple avenues open.
Nearly 7,000 Bernards JCP&L customers remained without power early Monday morning. According to the utility company's outage map, 6,660 were still out as of 5 a.m. The Bernards Township website said Sunday night that JCP&L was reporting 6,314 out of 13,047 Bernards Township customers remained without power, and about 52 percent of customers have had power restored. This is ridiculous! The whole section of houses next to lyons mall: summit, knollcroft, Dryden, Linden ... without power, and there was not even a word of these neighborhoods for 11 days by the township or anywhere! What are our mayor and township committee doing???   more ›
