Bernardsville/Basking Ridge VFW to Hold Veterans Days Events

Time for reflection, as well as public ceremony.

The Veterans of Foreign War Bernardsville Memorial Post 7858, which also represents Basking Ridge and surrounding towns, is planning both public ceremonies and time spent for reflection with fellow veterans on Monday, Veterans Day.

At 8 a.m. on Veterans Day, the VFW post will be raising the flag in the center of Bernardsville at 8:00 a.m., said William E. Staehle, post commander.

The veterans then will enjoy breakfast at the Bagel Bin at nearby Palmer Square in downtown Bernardsville as the guests of owners Sari and David Mazen.

Following that, two of the posts veterans, Bob Walsh and Perry Hamburg, will be meeting with residents of The Chelsea at Warren at 10:30 a.m. to socialize and talk about the significance of Veterans Day, as well discussing their military service, Staehle said.

Others members of the post will attend a veterans’ meeting, with coffee and fellowship, to begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Somerset Hills YMCA at 140 Mount Airy Road in Basking Ridge, according to Staehle.

At 4 p.m., the veterans will be back in Bernardsville to lower the flag at the Bernardsville Post Office off Quimby Lane.

They then will walk to the Station Pub & Grub where Diane Carr, proprietor, has arranged a “table of honor” and a special dinner for veterans to enjoy, he said.

"Mostly, we will be reflecting on our military experience and thinking about those men and women defending our freedom in military units in Afghanistan and on other dangerous assignments around the world," Staehle said.
