Basking Ridge Home, Car Burglaries Under Investigation

Jewelry and cash stolen from South Alward Avenue home and money taken from vehicle parked on Penns Way, police said.

A home on South Alward Avenue and a car parked on Penns Way in Society Hill were broken into and items were stolen this week, Bernards Township police reported on Thursday.

Bernards Police Lt. Mike Voorhees said the reported theft at a home took place on Wednesday morning between about 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. on South Alward Avenue.

Cash and jewelry were taken from the living room and bedroom of the home, according to the police report.

Voorhees said a resident at the home called police later in the afternoon, after initially believing she had misplaced the cash in the living room. However, according to the police report, she later discovered jewelry had been taken from the bedroom, and called police at about 4:30 p.m.

Voorhees declined to say whether the door was locked.

A few days earlier, some time between 10 p.m. Sunday and around noon on Monday, a car parked on Penns Way was entered, and some change and cash were stolen, according to the township police report. The amount of cash was not disclosed.

Voorhees said he did not know whether the car was locked. He said there are no suspects for either incident.

However, he noted there had been an arrest in Bedminster earlier this week for break-ins, although he added he is not linking that case with the ones in Basking Ridge.

In that reported case, three New York men were arrested in Bedminster on Tuesday after they were seen pulling on car door handles and found with items taken from vehicles, Bedminster police said.

There also have been a number of reported break-ins and thefts from other homes and vehicles in Bernards Township in recent months.
